This may seem like a silly question, but I’m a new Catholic so please bear with me :D.

Is it inappropriate/discouraged/improper to pray the rosary (like kneeling in the pew, rosary in hand and all) before Mass? I belong to a conservative, reverent parish and I did not want to do something if others there might find it inappropriate. I go to daily Mass (almost) every morning and since I carry my rosary with me anyways (Knights of Columbus), it dawned on me that I would rather pray the rosary in a quiet, reverent environment instead of at home where my pet bird screams at me for not playing with him while I’m praying (he’s so spoiled).

A Rosary before Mass is quite alright…in fact, many parishes
(mine included) say the rosary as a group before daily Mass.

my dear brother,

rosary before the mass, i think it is not inappropriate but it is not really so catholic.

The rosary is the highest form of mass it self so you cannot conduct a higher mass before a church mass.

Before the mass we should just prepare our conversation with god, talk to him, ask him to accept our gratitude to the gifts he has for us. We just need to prepare our selves for him before a mass.

I may be wrong, but no one has told me yet.

I am your brother in christ, and has been a catholic to the age of 11, to now…and it is ughhhhhh ermmm… 5…7…

Take care…

In our parish you would probably be asked to lead out loud for others, just bear that in mind, true of any mass

Sounds perfectly fine by me. When I was younger, my parish would offer the rosary and other morning prayers between the 2 daily masses (730 and 9). Regardless of whatever prayers you choose to pray before mass, what matters most is aligning your mind and your heart with Christ and His Sacrifice.

To focus your mind and heart on the Passion of Jesus by contemplating the mysteries of the Rosary-esp. the Sorrowful Mysteries before Mass is a very pious way of putting yourself in the Presence of God-who is there in front of you in the Tabernacle as you await His arrival upon the Altar-when through the offering of your Priest one is able to join Jesus as He offers Himself to His Father and Graces for the good of the whole world are poured out on those present., and upon the world.

Certainly you may if there is sufficient time before Mass (or you could finish later). At my parish the Legion of Mary members lead the rosary directly after the morning Masses. My parish church is also open all day, so you could go in at any time to pray before the tabernacle or say the rosary. We also have an adoration chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed and many people say a rosary there as they pray.

I would just like to remind you that maybe when and hopefully they are the church is filling not to kneel for a long time as to let others get by you in the pews. That is unless you like to be disrupted. And if you pray the rosary before mass - move all the way in so you are not an obstical to others.

Praying the Rosary in the church is just fine. It should not be prayed during Mass or outloud unless a group is praying it and then the group Rosary should be separated from beginning or end of Mass by about 15 or 20 minutes.

Where in the world did you ever learn this? The rosary is not any sort of Mass, it is a method of prayer.

This is exactly what prayer of the rosary is and does. The rosary is an entirely appropriate and acceptable way to prepare for Mass.

Consider yourself told. 😉

It is perfectly fine to pray the rosary before Mass.

Though it appears that you are asking about praying the rosary silently, I’d love to ask others to please be respectful to those of us who also there to pray in that wonderful, reverent, quiet before Mass and do NOT want to pray the Rosary at that time. It can be so distracting to get to Mass early, hoping for some quiet time with Our Lord to have the Rosary droning on and on and on - finishing 2 minutes before Mass.

I wish it were so.

JL: I would think in a conservative parish there would be many saying the rosary before mass and some after mass individually or together. Look around I bet you will see some doing so. My parish is not conservative or quite (though it was quite some years back) we have a side chapel for the tabernacle and many come there before mass to say the rosary individually. Nothing could be more appropriate than saying the rosary before mass.

Most of the regulars do spend a lot of time praying before Mass; maybe they’re praying the rosary and I just don’t know about it. I never see them with a rosary though, so I never thought about this until you mentioned it.

In the back of the parish, near the main entrance, there appears to be a kind of adoration corner, but it’s fenced off and I have no idea how to get in there. I suppose I could ask, but don’t want to look like a dummy when they simply open a latch that I missed when I was looking. 😃

Thanks, everyone, for the answers. Great to hear that I can pray the rosary before Mass!

Not at all. It is perfectly acceptible to the Rosary before mass

Don’t be afraid to ask - if you can’t see an entrance then other people almost certainly can’t either, so I’d make a sizeable bet that you won’t be the first person to have asked 🙂

As for the Rosary - it’s fine. As has been said, many churches do have public Rosary recitation before daily or weekend Masses.

I’m used to praying my own private prayers, for example during the offertory and post-communion hymns at mass, through organ practice beforehand, on public transport, at work etc, so very few things bother me. I guess it depends on what you’re used to.

If there’s no quiet before Mass perhaps there will be afterwards and you can pray then or something.

That is pertty much what my parish does as well. A Rosary starts up about a half hour before Mass, as as people file in and go to their pews, they join in.

It finishes up just as Mass is about to start.

The Rosary is a private devotion. Catholics are not even required to pray it (although it is highly recommended). The Rosary before Mass is a good way of preparing for Mass. THe Mass IS the highest form of prayer because it is the offering of Christ Himself in Thankgiving to the Father. At Mass we join in His sacrifice and offer ourselves to God in praise and thanksgiving and share in the Holy Banquet which is Christ Himself. I don’t know how anything, even the Rosary, can top that. That is why one should not be praying the Rosary during Mass. Nothing should be higher than our participation in the Holy Mass.

This makes me crazy. Why can’t people who want to pray the Rosary pray it silently and leave those of us who want to pray the Liturgy of the Hours or the Divine Mercy Chaplet or some other devotion or simply listen for Jesus in the silence free to do so?

I know that makes me a grinch.

It seems the Rosary before Mass is simply a tradition. Maybe you could chat with your priest and he could make an announcement that those who wish to say the Rosary could do it silently, and have him explain the reason so people don’t get upset about it.

Maybe, though, you could say your DMC or LotH on the way to the church or something, save your Rosary for the time before Mass, and pray it along with everyone else.
