A little history lesson about me before I start… I was atheist and had a REALLY hard time in my conversion with faith and such… That is it 🙂

I want to create my own little rosary dedicated to atheists, agnostics and those struggling with their belief in God. I feel close to them as my brothers and sisters because of the struggles I have had. The same exact struggles are their same exact objections. Their struggles are view as rational objections. Anyway, I have a few in mind, but I was wondering if anybody could help me pick out some Bible verses to meditate on. Perhaps, this will help me with my own faith.

Here is what I have so far:

Hebrews 11:
1 Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.
2 Because of it the ancients were well attested.
3 By faith we understand that the universe was ordered by the word of God, so that what is visible came into being through the invisible.

1 Corinthians 15:
12 But if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead?
13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then neither has Christ been raised.
14 And if Christ has not been raised, then empty (too) is our preaching; empty, too, your faith.
15 Then we are also false witnesses to God, because we testified against God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if in fact the dead are not raised.
16 For if the dead are not raised, neither has Christ been raised,
17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins.
18 Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
19 If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable people of all.
20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
21 For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead came also through a human being.
22 For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life,
23 But each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ;
24 then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power.

John 20:
**24 Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
25 So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
26 Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”
27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”
28 Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of (his) disciples that are not written in this book.
31 But these are written that you may (come to) believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name. **

Of course, they will be truncated a little bit if I even choose them… The only one of these that is set in stone is the Hebrews 11. Probably as the opening “Mystery”, if it could even be called that.

And do not be shy to give me over 5 passages… The more the merrier… Of course, I will eventually pick only 5… Or perhaps even 10 and split it up into two days or just do it twice a day… Or whatever… Just give whatever comes to mind…

And please do not be upset (which I am sure will not happen) if i do not wish to pick a passage… Obviously, “For God so loved the world…” seems VERY good for this but I want it to reflect the doubt and faith struggles people go through.

Anyway, is this even a good idea or am I just another 10-cent idiot?

Thank you for your thoughts and as always…

God bless 🙂

Oh… and I may not be back until Monday… I have no clue if I will get to a computer until then… But, thank you for your time anyway!!! Discuss away until then also… Feel free to call me an idiot for doing this. No offense taken… There is no offense taken in what I already know.

Also, ideas for truncating the verses are also acceptable… Any help with anything would be good!

And if nobody comes here… I completely understand… I would not come to a thread started by GreggAlvarez also if I did not know him, but unfortunately I am a schmuck and do know him and happen to BE him… 🙂

God bless! 🙂

I pray for the conversion of non-believers & sinners all the time as intentions during the Rosary. If you want to focus on atheists, I think that’s great. From now on though, please consider yourself to be a Child of God not a schmuck or an idiot.🙂

Crystal waters: My intentions were not to disregard the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries. They keep me sane! I would never not pray them throughout the week!

In any case, those Scriptural verses are an account of Christ’s life… Kind of… Hebrews focuses on the pre-Incarnate Word, Creation and Faith… Corinthians on the reality of the Resurrection… John on the doubting of Thomas and the beatitude of not seeing yet believing.

I pray for most of those things also… Admittedly, I do forget some specific intentions. Thanks for the comments though! I will pray for those things also.

God bless!

GreggAlvarez, 🙂

I love the idea. I also have a lot of compassion for atheists and understand their struggle. I actually understand atheism as a stage of spiritual development. It’s a tough one.

Let me think about it and perhaps I could suggest something to you. I am kind of busy these days. I encourage you to continue. I hope you come up with something good. Go to Adoration and present your thoughts to the Lord and pray, pray and then pray some more. I have also been designing a chaplet on something else and I definately like my chaplet and so do people who have prayed it and it has even encouraged people to go to confession, including a person that had not confessed in 77 years. Just that result has made it worthwhile 🙂

God bless,

Abba

I’d say you already have a great selection. There are some sites in which you can search on all the verses of the bible. topverses.com comes to mind, just add the www.

I often get frustrated in discussions on here but always try to remain charitable. They can push pretty hard.

You are doing a wonderful thing. God Bless you and you now know you made the right decision!!!

GreggAlvarez,🙂

I was just thinking that maybe your chaplet can be added to the end of the book I am writing which is entitled:

ATHEISM
A STAGE OF SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

Thank you for the advice! But, considering my lack of intelligence, I had no idea what to search for besides “faith” and “doubt”. I will keep trying!

God bless

I will do my best 🙂

I noticed you have a lot from John. How about the Bread of Life Discourse. It’s John 6:25-71. Every time I medicate on that Gospel, I really feel sympathy for those who do not believe. Jesus explained the Bread of Life in a literal way like 6 times, and people still turned and walked away. He left absolutely no room for doubt and still, they turned away. Seems like that is appropriate meditation when praying for atheists.

I think it’s a great idea to pray for people who do not believe 🙂

You might also be interested in the green scapular… someone in my family found faith in God after I sent her one, and prayed the prayer for her every day (“Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death”). Here is more information 🙂 olrl.org/pray/greenscapular.shtml they sell green Scapulars in most Catholic stores at least in my experience.

There is also this website that is very good maybe to share with someone: conversiondiary.com/2008/04/finding-god-in-5-steps.html

Thank you for that! I will check out the full text in a bit and see how I could fit it in with it! I have been drawing blanks on this for the past few days… That and I have been busy.

God bless!

I have it figured out!

When trying to figure it out, I had to ask the regular round of questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why? I found that where and when were irrelevant to Faith. Admittedly, I did take a different route from previously expected, but it has helped my own faith tremendously. Not that I myself doubted… It just helped me spiritually and gets my mind to actually be still!

Well, here goes:

During the first 3 Hail Marys of the Rosary, here is an optional thing to say:

First John 1:1 – “What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we looked upon and touched with our hands concerns the Word of life.”

First Hail Mary. For Faith

First John 1:2 – “for the life was made visible; we have seen it and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was made visible to us.”

Second Hail Mary. For Hope

First John 1:3 – “What we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; for our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.”

Third Hail Mary. For love.

(Or you can just say the entire passage after the first Glory Be and before the first “mystery” or just exclude it.)
  1. Hebrews 11:1,3,6 – “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. By faith we understand that the universe was ordered by the word of God, so that what is visible came into being through the invisible. But without faith it is impossible to please him, for anyone who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
[Reason: This one goes without saying, but this is for the definition of Faith.]
  1. John 1:1-5,9,14 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.”
[Reason: Faith in who and what is so special about this “worshippee”?]
  1. First Corinthians 15:12,20-2 – “But if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead? But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead came also through a human being. For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life.”
[Reason: Faith in what? Why is this event so special?]
  1. John 20:24-9 – “Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.’ Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.’ Thomas answered and said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.’”
[Reason: Faith versus doubt/unbelief. This one is about unbelief and the idea of needing visible evidence to see and touch. This is also to pray that they actually trust the witness of other human beings.]
  1. Revelations 22:13,17b,22 – “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.’ Let the one who thirsts come forward, and the one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.”
[Reason: Why need faith in the first place?]

Of course, I say a little meditation and a little prayer after each passage. Also, after each Fatima prayer, I say Revelations 22:17 – The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let the hearer say, “Come.” After the Hail, Holy Queen, I say a longer meditation and prayer.

What do you all think? The absolute, hardest thing to do was to leave out verses. I read the New Testament for this and I found many great passages. Actually, about 15. As the numbers started diminishing, the choice to exclude others got harder and harder.

Anyway, God bless if anybody gets this far. God bless if nobody even reads this!

God bless,

Abba
Well, my electricity went out on Tuesday and I had sleepless nights. So, between 3 and 5 in the morning from Wednesday to Saturday, I went to Adoration at my church and stayed for 3 to 4 hours. Let me tell you. What an awesome thing our Lord does for us in that! I really wish Protestants actually knew. If only wishing made it so… So, about 17 hours in Adoration has been a great blessing. No electricity in my house was a blessing of sorts.

Anyway, most of that time was spent reading the New Testament and praying. Reading the Word with the Word. 🙂 So, after about 8 or 9 hours spent on this Rosary, I get the above. I tried it and I liked it. Even if I am the only one on the planet that likes it, I will continue to use it.

In my conversion from atheism there were two scriptures that really spoke to me:

Psalm 63, in particular, “*O God, you are my God-- for you I long! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts, Like a land parched, lifeless, and without water.”

and

*Psalm 46, *“Be still and know that I am God.”
*

I like the verses that you chose 🙂 and that is great that you went to Adoration and prayed about this! I also wish that Protestants knew about the Blessed Sacrament 🙂

God bless!

Anyway, is this even a good idea or am I just another 10-cent idiot?

Thank you for your thoughts and as always…

God bless 🙂
Why? if you think prayers are useful pray for someone who wants your prayers, atheists have no concern for your prayers, you might as well pee in the ocean.
