In the Apostolic Letter, ROSARIUM VIRGINIS MARIAE, section 33, JPII suggests following the custom that is used in some regions of “highlighting the name of Christ by the addition of a clause referring to the mystery being contemplated” while praying the Hail Mary’s.

I assume this would be something like “…and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus, risen from the dead. Holy Mary…” for the Resurrection; “Jesus, conceived of the Holy Spirit” for the Annunciation, etc.

Has anyone prayed the Rosary in this way? What clauses have you used for the various mysteries?

I believe St. Louis de Montefort (sp?) was the first one to recommend praying the Rosary this way. I’ve only prayed the Rosary this way once, making up the clauses as I went. I can’t remember what I came up with, though. I would be interested to see what phrases others use as well.

I have tried to pray the Rosary with added clauses and well, while I understand the concept that Jesus is “the enter of gravity” of this prayer, I just find it awkward and artificial.

I am not good with transistions of this sort anyway. I am more than a bit forgetful and I forget to add the change. Then I start remembering to add it and then I get confused on which of the two I should be using. 🤓 So, I just gave up adding the clauses unless my heart is especially burdened to deepen my contemplation.

Tried this before sorry if it repeats-

I have looke into this in some detail. There seems to be a reletively standard set for all but the newer Luminous mysteries. Here is a small sample from what I collected from various sources for todays (Tue.) rosary -

1st - The Agony of Jesus in the garden

Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and said unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then said he unto them: “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me”. And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying: “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt”.* (Mat 26,36-39)*. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (Luk 22,44)

O Lady of Sorrows, your Son in the Garden of Gethsemane took upon Himself the sins of all mankind. Offering Himself to the Father for us He became the “scapegoat. His very own abandoned Him and one of the Apostles betrayed Him. At the beginning of the Passion the Disciples were in the Garden while he went apart to pray. Three of them, nearby, Peter, James, and John fell asleep. They could not watch one hour with Him. Alone your Jesus suffered His agony entreating the Father to let the chalice of suffering pass, if possible, but at the same time He prayed that the will of the Father be accomplished. There on his knees in prayer Jesus sweat blood.

In the forsaking prayer to the Father, Jesus found strength, and trust, and an angel was sent to comfort Him. So Jesus will be our comforting angel. It’s as He said to us: " Why do you worry in your difficulties? Be strong in me; look to your God in your most troubled hour, and you will be triumphant." Let us ask to forsake ourselves to God, to always do His will.

OUR FATHER,

  1. Code:
Be with Jesus in the garden. Kneel beside Him and feel the pain in His Heart. …
  2. Code:
How tenderly He loves us that God came to this earth and gave Himself for love of us. …
  3. Code:
Jesus is a Person. He loves each one of us with a most personal love. …
  4. Code:
He is a Divine Person. He loves us more than any human person could love us. …
  5. Code:
Jesus saw before Him all His suffering. …
  6. Code:
He knew the sins of all men from all time. …
  7. Code:
Because of His great love for us and for all men His Heart was in such pain. …
  8. Code:
He knows and loves us more than we know and love ourselves. …
  9. Code:
He is alive this day and He lives in our hearts. …
  10. Code:
He wants us to love Him at every moment and He is forgotten and ignored and He is God. …
…HAIL MARY, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy. Amen.

Our Lady of the Rosary, obtain for me from your Son the grace of contrition, so that I may grieve over my sins, which made Christ suffer.

Then on to the 2nd etc.

Thanks dvberte.

Is there a link somewhere to this standard set that you mentioned?

That sounds like a good way to pray the Rosary and I’ll have to try it sometime, but it wasn’t what I was expecting.

I was expecting something more along the lines such of…
“Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus in agony. Holy Mary…”

That would be of course for the Agony in the Garden mystery and would be said for each Hail Mary. Clauses for the other Sorrowful Mysteries could be:
Jesus scourged
Jesus crowned with thorns
Jesus suffering
Jesus crucified

Some of the other mysteries are more difficult though. For example, what do you say for the mysteries of the Assumption or Coronation of Mary?

I could say Jesus our Redeemer, and it would be appropriate, but that could also be applied to just about any mystery.

Something like this was sort of what I had in mind, but I was hoping for some better suggestions than these:

Joyful Mysteries:
Annunciation Jesus conceived
Visitation Jesus source of joy
Birth of Jesus Jesus our brother
Presentation Jesus offered to the Father
Jesus Found in the Temple Jesus Son of God

Luminous Mysteries:
Baptism in the Jordon Jesus who seeks the lost
Wedding Feast at Cana Jesus our Bridegroom
Proclamation of the Kingdom Jesus fulfillment of the prophesies
Transfiguration Jesus our Hope
Institution of the Eucharist Jesus Our Daily Bread

Sorrowful Mysteries:
Agony in the Garden Jesus in agony
Scourging at Pillar Jesus scourged
Jesus is Crowned with Thorns Jesus crowned with thorns
Jesus Carries His Cross Jesus bearer of all suffering
The Crucifixion Jesus dying for us

Glorious Mysteries:
The Resurrection Jesus risen from the tomb
The Ascension Jesus at the right hand of the Father
The Descent of the Holy Spirit Jesus our help
The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Jesus our destiny
The Coronation of Mary Jesus crowner of glory
