I know the rosary is an amazing prayer, and I love it’s idea and things, but when i try to pray it, I get distracted, and it seems almost painful to pray it. I dread beginning it and am very happy when it is over. The amount of will power it takes for me to finish a rosary is a lot, and when I have committed myself to praying the rosary every day, I always fail after a few weeks or so. Why?

The rosary is a personal devotion. If it is not helping you grow closer to God,you might want to consider a different devotion. . You can be a good Catholic and never, ever say a rosary.

But I do feel more peaceful after I pray it, and my life seems smoother. It just take so much out of me to do it.

Hi AmericanRose,

If you struggle with praying it but would still like to pray it, then I would also recommend praying it on-line with a program that can help you to stay more focused, just like CatholicFireman recommended in the link that he provided.

There are also other videos on YouTube that you can use, too.

I have little Rosary booklets that I refer to that also help me to stay more focused, as my mind also tends to wander, too. 🙂

Greetings AmericanRose, I agree when I started praying the rosary I thought it was long and treacherous. I listened to it on youtube and I still felt slightly bored but then I fully embraced it and started saying it by myself. I hope the youtube rosary helps, it has some nice singing and relaxing music in it too and you can say it with the people reciting the rosary. May the Blessed Mother Mary and our Lord, Jesus Christ, aid you in praying the Most Holy Rosary 👍

Well, are you attaching your own prayers to the end of the fatimah prayer and the glory be prayer? I know I tuck my private prayers in after these prayers and it makes the rosary so powerful for me, not tedious or boring. Try that if you have not 😉

You can pray it a decade at a time. That’s how we do it with children in Catholic schools.
A decade before each class.
No stress.

if you find the Rosary stressful then try something else.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy requires less concentration and you can do it to music.

Try just praying one decade. Then build up to two decades. And so on.
Rosaries are like an exercise routine. Sometimes we need to work up to saying the whole thing.
As a young person it seemed like a long and often monotonous prayer. Now it seems much easier for me to say, but that is after many years of developing a habit of saying it. I can sometimes say 15 or 20 decades now, but years ago that would have seemed like an awful chore.

Another suggestion is try saying it while you are doing something else like taking a walk. Sometimes the extra activity will burn off some of the distraction one gets when just sitting.

If despite your best efforts, you are still having trouble, please feel free to look into another form of prayer. Perhaps you would get more out of prayerfully meditating on Scripture, or reciting prayers from a Catholic prayer book, or doing Eucharistic Adoration, or saying the Divine Mercy…there is a lot to choose from.

When you begin your day with your morning offering, pick one decade of the Rosary and offer all your joys, sorrows, and struggles to honor that particular mystery. Say something like “I love you Jesus as you were born in Bethlehem. Please be a part of this day.” Always offer up your joys, sorrows and struggles and sufferings in union with Christ for the salvation of souls as our Lady of Fatima has asked. This is a good foundation to build on. May God bless and keep you!

if it takes you a few weeks to fail you are doing well keep it up the harder it gets the more Jesus is allowing you to share in his passion and other forces will try harder to fight you well done

Often, I do it in segments. A decade while doing something repetitive, another one or two during lunch or a break. I can often exceed five decades easily, or do the five with no struggles.

Throughout the ages, it has been proven that the Rosary is a very powerful, spiritual weapon. I have read the story of the Battle of Lepanto, In fact, I began praying the Rosary after reading Louis de Montfort book Secret of the Rosary.

In the beginning I had to force myself to pray the Rosary, but noticed that the more I prayed it, the easier it became.

As a guide I have been using a booklet titled The Rosary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. What I like about this guide is that I am not neglecting to pray for the Poor Souls, but that does not keep me from asking also for favors. Another thing why I like praying with this particular guide is that each decade is preceded by a scriptural verse. With the passing of time, I have made many of the verses my own. I found them to be useful to quote when I needed to bolster my convictions when talking with others who I know also believe in God, but don’t believe, for example, in purgatory.

Anytime, for whatever reason when I feel frightened or upset, or when I can’t go to sleep, I will pick-up my Rosary and start praying. It calms me down and it gives me the satisfaction that holy Mary and her Son, Jesus, have heard me and certainly will take care of my anxieties. What better consolation can I ask for?

I find that when I do a lot of online browsing or video watching, it’s incredbily hard to focus through a rosary. When I cut back on the media consumption, my imagination is less wild.

Figure out what kinds of things distract you the most and trying cutting them out of your life temporarily to see if you have good results.

Perhaps your a little like me, I find it hard to Focus as well,
The Mind is a bit overactive ,
Perhaps you could change from saying the Rosery to saying Radom Prayers during the day,
There is also the Lords Prayer in Song, Google it ,
it’s ok to vary things to keep the mind interested ,
Prayer should never be like a Chore, because it might lose its meaning if it’s a Chore,

That’s a really cool site. I like the idea of there being other people online praying with me as I’m often by myself praying so even if there’s just one other person it makes 2 gathering in His name. The Internet is good sometimes.
That’s exactly how I feel.

I don’t pray it at all because, to me, it is bound up with familial death and crisis. So yeah, we are on adjacent pages.
