I have started praying the rosary again. Have been doing the 150. I have never really meditated on the mysteries when doing it though. I usually say or pray the rosary for something or someone. I usually do the rosary when driving. It’s kind of my quiet time. Folks that pray the 150 and meditate on the mysteries, how do u do this. Do u memorize them? I just able to memorize them. I have a hard time with the hail holy queen closing prayer. I just usually say another prayer to finish the rosary. Would like to hear some ways other folks may pray the 150.

Thanks

Hi. When I first started praying the rosary regularly, I went to the Catholic Supplies shop and brought a little 32 page booklet entitled “Praying the Rosary”. Each night, I held my Rosary in my right hand, and prayed with the booklet in my left hand, until I had memorised each mystery and it’s fruit. and announced my prayer intentions after I had made the sign of the cross and before I recited the Apostles’ Creed at the beginning I hope this helps.

What I did was I memorized the mysteries along with a specific virtue that is especially evident in that mystery. While saying the Ave’s, I meditate on how that mystery teaches us that specific virtue and the importance of the mystery itself. As for memorizing the Salve Regina, after saying it for long enough you will have it memorized. As far as I know, meditation on the mysteries and the Salve Regina are necessary parts of the rosary.

Over the course of reciting the Rosary daily it becomes easier to remember each mystery. One of the beautiful things about the Rosary is even though it becomes familiar there are new insights that come up over the years. There is always something more to learn and in doing so to grow closer to God.

There are guidebooks that others have mentioned. If you don’t have a Catholic Bookstore close by, they sell several on Amazon. Hail Holy Queen is printed in the books, and it is on prayer cards as well.

You can print or hand copy the words off the internet and carry them in your pocket or wallet.

Several Saints have great writings about the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary that are helpful.

I joined the Holy Rosary Confraternity on the Internet. If you join, they will send you a free booklet with some additional prayers, and a bi monthly newsletter. To be a member, you just have to commit to doing 15 decades per week and saying a prayer that includes the other members of the Confraternity. There are additional blessings that come with doing that.

I am assuming that the one I joined is the same organization that was mentioned in writings by the Saints. The Confraternity has been recognized by past Popes.

If I am wrong about the Confraternity, hopefully someone will correct me about it.👍

I’m learning it right now, too. Don’t feel bad, I have a lot of trouble remembering the Hail Holy Queen at the end, too. I use an app on my phone when I need to sneak a peek at the words.

I read about the Jesuit Spiritual Exercises recently and something stuck out to me that has helped me concentrate more easily on the mysteries. Imagine the scene in your mind, as if you were a bystander or a participant or whatever you want, and then let it play out in your imagination like a movie and reflect on the things that stick out to you. As a non-Christian, it’s hard for me to understand a lot of things about Catholic/Christian dogma, but when I imagine myself as part of the crowd or as maybe one of the Roman soldiers in the Sorrowful Mysteries or as as a silent witness to the Joyful Mysteries, I start to understand why you guys feel the way you do about Jesus and Mary.

First of all, I don’t pray the rosary while I’m driving. For me, I can’t do two important things like that at the same time.

You can probably shop online for an inexpensive rosary guide to use until you are totally familiar with the standard mysteries. I understand that the Franciscan orders have a different rosary, with seven decades, but I have no details on that.

Thank you. Here I am, Catholic from birth, and I have learned something. 🙂 I’m afraid despite my best efforts at spiritual reading, I fail at it for many reasons. How you summed up one thing is helpful to me.

I use Laudate (Rosary app for iPhone and Android); it has a virtual Rosary you can use, or (my favorite) many podcasts of the Rosary. You could also find a Rosary video on Youtube. I have the easiest time remembering the Joyous Mysteries; I’m learning the others. They are the events of Jesus’ life, in order, if that helps.

I didn’t use to be able to remember the Hail Holy Queen. Now, it is one of my most favorite prayers. In fact, the Lenten calendar I received from my donation to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC had a devotion today that included the Hail, Holy Queen.

It is so beautiful!

God bless you for praying the Rosary.

There are a number of aids to the meditations. There are many good books out there. I’ve been writing meditations on the Mysteries. I’d like to share my Lenten Meditations. I hope you find this helpful and wishing you blessings on your journey with the beautiful and powerful Holy Rosary!
