Rosary on car mirror?

I had a rosary hanging from my mirror, until my 1 year old son pulled it and broke it. (No, I wasn’t driving with him in the front seat. He was nursing before we went into the grocery store.)

Now it is in my center console. But I would like to have another for my mirror. I like the symbolism. It reminds me to pray. And you never know when you are gonna a spare. (I keep one in my purse also.)

I used to have one hanging several years ago, but I had to take it down. I’m a very alert driver, and my eyes were constantly drawn to it’s swaying motion. It just wasn’t safe for me to have it up anymore. It’s now in my glove box where I can still have easy access to it.

Yes, I used to have one hanging on my rearview mirror. I had to remove it because the crucifix kept banging on the dash:eek: and when I wound the rosary around the mirror, it ended up hitting the windshield. It was very distracting.

I view it as similar to the people that drive around with the ‘fish’ on their car, I hang a Rosary from my rear view to keep my mind in gear and remember how the Good Lord wants me to drive!

I’ve also got a St. Christopher clip on my sun visor –

When I drive by an accident I generally actually grab my little plastic car-rosary just because it’s there and I feel like we should be praying for those in the accident.

And honestly, being a convert, I rarely PRAY the rosary, I’m still working on what prayers go where, but I do see it as a symbol of my faith and I’m proud to hang it there –

I just got my daughters little cheap rosaries from the Catholic Book Store today, the two little ones got pink, but Emma, Emma wanted glow in the dark 😉

I only have one rosary and i don’t drive. My fiance would object me hanging one in his car, though I might one day because he has quite the road rage at times!!

If I had a car, i would hang one, cause I think it’s neat to see them in different cars.

I carry mine in my pocket all the time. I carry a pouch at work and mine fell out one day and my boss saw…she gave me trouble for having it at work. She said that “this is a place of work and that isn’t acceptable”. So i simply told her, that Jesus thinks it acceptable and so do i. She didn’t say anything to me after that…it felt good!!

**Good for you! No one has the right to tell you that you cannot carry a rosary in your pocket…Not even your boss:D **

…We have a rosary and a scapular on our rearview mirror, … The scapular, well, we all wear one around our necks, we have one on our front and back doors, so it only seemed natural to put one on our van.
What is a scapular? I looked up scapular and got this description:
"Description. It consists essentially of a piece of cloth about the width of the breast from one shoulder to the other (i.e. about fourteen to eighteen inches), and of such a length that it reaches not quite to the feet in front and behind. There are also shorter forms of the scapular. In the middle is the opening for the head, the scapular thus hanging down from two narrow connecting segments resting on the shoulders."

I am laughing out loud thinking that you have some big piece of cloth blocking the front window of your car. And why they would be on your doors. So obviously I don’t know.

I have a glow in the dark rosary hanging from my rearview. My priest at UMD distibuted them, he thought they were cool…he’s young at heart. Anyway, I hang mine there to remind me of my roadrage problem and I just like having Jesus there with me while I’m driving. I’m in my car a lot, and every once in a while, I kiss the crucifix when I’m feeling the Holy Spirit within me.

I dont think it matters if people hang it on their rearview and dont always pray it. People use rosaries, scapulars, and other religious symbols to feel close to God through out the day. I dont think its fair to say that people who dont pray the rosary and/or arent “good Catholics” shouldnt hang them from rearviews. Its not up to me or anyone else to make that call. I’d rather see that hanging there than a Playboy bunny.
I agree. I have a rosary in my car, and I actually do pray it. But no one could possibly know that by driving by and noticing it hanging from my rearview. To ASSUME it is hanging there for good luck or decoration is very uncharitable, and a danger zone for pride … thinking we are better or holier than. We cannot possibly know whether the person prays it or not. To assume that they don’t hints at a desire that they don’t. Why would we desire that? So we can feel better than? I fell along that way of thinking myself … it’s pride. Recognize it and fight against it. If we know that someone is only using it it as a culture statement or decoration, we should be sad and pray for that person … not huffy. Be glad it’s there. Perhaps someday … they will use it.

Ana,
thanks for pointing that out to me…mea culpa, I do have a problem with pride. Please pray for me…
God isn’t done with me yet!
BTW, I didn’t assume anything, I was told flat out by someone who doesn’t practice the Faith! When I asked why the Rosary on the mirror? I was told it’s just a “good luck” thing and it had no meaning to that person… I do pray for that person all the time… God Bless, Annunciata:)

I got a funny story to tellk ya’ll.

I went to catholic school for 5 years. One time my brother bought this wall rosary, and it was glow in the dark, but thats the thing, i didn’t know it was glow in the dark. So, he hung it up and he always left his door open, and he hung it where every1 could see it. Well me, i walked by the room, and when i saw that rosary glowing, i thought I was chosen to be the next MOSES!. I kicked off my sandels and i thought my hair was ganna turn grey and i felt like I was the next “Chosen One”. Well I screamed and i told my mom, " God is talking to me", and i took her over there, she couldn’t stop laughing. People still call me “Chosen” even today!

I keep a rosary on my mirror. It is partly a statement that I am a Catholic. But I also use that rosary as well. I have several rosaries and keep them all over the house and in my car. That way I always have a rosary with me when I want to say the Rosary. On my way home from work, ( I work midnights), I often stop at daily Mass on my way home. If I got off early enough to get there in time for the Rosary I always have a rosary to grab on my way in to Church.

I never thought of it as a sin. It just seems a way to keep myself centered on my faith. To remember to say a pray instead of get mad if let say another driver cuts me off.

Of course you are right we should never assume such a thing, but unfortunately it’s more of a fact than not.

Somewhere along the line “sacramentals” started being used more in the realm of a fashion statement and not with love and devotion. You can probably thank the likes of people like madonna (please note my small “m”) who have turned sacramentals into sacrileges.

Oh to live in a world that every rosary hanging on every mirror was devotedly kissed upon entering a car.

All for you my sweet Jesus!

I used to have a St. Christoper medal hanging from the mirror but never replaced it after it broke. I don’t like the look of a rosary hanging from the mirror; I keep one in the glove compartment though. —KCT

I think it’s disrespectful towards the purpose of the Rosary --just like folks who obviously aren’t Christians or Catholics to be wearing some huge dangling cross as jewelry–then they take the Lord’s name in vain, live immorally, etc. etc.

I don’t have a Rosary hanging from my car mirror, but I do have a medal of my Patron Saint and a Crucifix hanging there. I do have a Rosary in my center console for occasions that I am caught without my purse. But I also have one in my purse, on my desk and on my bedside table.

I like to see them hanging on the rearview mirror and it is my hope that the car owner is making a statement of their faith, not just using it as a decoration or a “good luck” thing.

I usually alternate the Rosary with the Divine Mercy Chaplet while driving long distances because it soothes me, makes me feel protected on my journey and much closer to God. 👍

:rotfl: That’s hilarious! And although this is OT, I have to post the story: You totally reminded me of something I did when I was about 5!

I was sitting at Mass next to my Mom…every week. And I don’t remember if it was a new thing or if I just started to take notice, but Fr. Webber started praying over the loudspeaker during the Our Father…you know that section, “…and grant us peace in our day. Keep us free from sin and protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ…” I think what was different was that he was usuing a mike, wheras our church was small enough so that he could normally project his voice.

But we often had background music, so I guess he decided to be sure we could hear! Anyhoo, I sat next to Mom and suddenly this big voice came over the loudspeakers…during the OUR FATHER of all prayers!

I tugged at Mom’s sleeve, but she shooed me away. I sat aghast, thinking that God was actually talking to us AND NO ONE CARED!!! I felt that it was VERY IMPORTANT that I bring this to Mom’s attention. So I whispered more loudly, “Mom…is that GOD??? Is He talking to us??? We have to LISTEN!”

She paid me no mind, just looked at me strangely and we went to the sign of peace. I felt for a long time that somehow I’d been especially blessed to have heard God when no one else did! :rotfl:

I later figured out that Father was using a microphone and that Mom had had NO IDEA what I was talking about when I asked her if his voice was God’s. I guess she just thought I was nuts for awhile. 🙂

I just wish I could always go to Mass and think that it was God addressing us directly over the PA system! LOL

Anyway, back to the topic…I do carry a rosary on my rearview mirror as a very recent addition. It was my First Communion rosary and amazingly, I now pray the rosary every morning as I drive to work. It is not only a statement of my faith, but a symbol to remind me of the presence of Christ.

Thats soooo weird! I was actually thinking to myself as I typed my post … “well except for those like madonna”. I didn’t type it for the sake of brevity, but I’m glad you did!

Annunciata,
You’re welcome! I struggle with pride all the time. The worst is when I don’t see it. Then I’m spinning in a circle going … where is it? where is it? At least when I see it, I can confess it and pray for humility. It’s the sins I don’t see that I am wary of.

God bless.

Hanging things from the rearview mirror is dangerous!!! You’ve all heard of the blonde who crashed didn’t you???
An Arizona State trooper arrived at the accident site in the middle of the dessert. There was a young Blonde man (right) standing by his wrecked car. The officer asked what happened. The blonde said he was driving down the road when suddenly a tree appeared in front of him, so he swerved to the right. Another tree jumped in front of him so he swerved to the left. Another tree appeared so he swerved to the right again, at which time he lost control of the vehicle. The officer listened, said “sir, you do know you’re in the middle of the dessert and there are no trees for hundreds of miles don’t you”? “Sir you were seeing your air freshener hanging on the rearview mirror.”

I discussed this with my mother last weekend because I got a different car and she told me that in order for the protection of the rosary to work to it’s full power, you need to use it to pray the rosary every so often (she suggested it every 2 weeks) because a rosary was intended to be used for prayer not as an ornament. 🙂

Well, it was good to see the names of the banned from this old thread.

Just don’t make your hanging rosaries into superstitions! 🙂
