Since we aren’t supposed to use the rosary as decoration, why do so many of us (myself included) have a rosary hanging on our vehicles rear view mirror?

To tell you the truth, I haven’t put much thought into it. I just find it comforting to be near a blessed object, a mark of my faith…especially when someone’s driving like a maniac. Oh wait, that’s usually me 😅

“Car rosaries” are not supposed to be decorations. They’re supposed to be for people who pray in the car or otherwise need to have a rosary handy when they go places.

I think there is a gray area here. Many people have nice beautiful rosaries they display, and why not. Some rosaries show beautiful depictions of Mary, or saints. To have it displayed on ones mirror so others know one is Catholic is very similar to having a pendant. The most important thing though, is that one has a rosary in their car they can use to pray. From your question, it doesn’t sound like you pray the rosary in your car. Many Catholics do, I hope you start. It’s a nice time to do it.

The one i have in my car can hardly be called decorative, it’s one of those white plastic, very plain ones.

I regularly pray the rosary in my car, but I use a rosary ring for that. I have none to remind me to constantly pray. I wanted others opinions

I have one in my car but not hanging from my mirror. I think when I was young I heard someone comment that it was “tacky” to do that and I guess it just stuck in my brain forever. I see it all the time though.

The swinging would distract me.

well if you want specifics; i have the rosary ring suspended by a gold chain hanging from my rear-view mirror

i keep a full five decade rosary draped over the passenger seat so that i can say the rosary in my car;
which like the poster before is what i do

Here in the Philippines Rosaries or any hanging objects which can swing around are banned from rear view mirrors. This is a safety issue.

Those of you who pray in the car…how do you keep track of what Hail Mary you’re on? Are you actually fingering the beads while you’re driving?

I’ve tried just keeping track of how far I’m into a decade in my head, but as soon as I’m distracted by something on the road I’m lost. How do you do it?

I find them uncomfortable, but it does sound like a good idea. I’m sure I’ll get used to it after a few times. Thanks!

There is a crucifix there. Everytime a driver looks at it, is to remind him/her that Jesus died on the cross for us. So drive courteously, charitably and safely.

Thank you! I’ll give it a try. It would be well worth it - I spend a lot of time in the car

It is illegal to drive with something hanging from your rear view mirror; that said, I do have a necklace from Cancun hanging there.

Maybe when you bought it 2nd hand, the rosary was already there and you really didn’t notice it until you got it home. Taking it off of your rear view mirror is on your “to do” list, you just haven’t got to it
