Forgive my ignorance. What is the rosary? I understand it is a prayer that is written out. I cannot find it in its entirety anywhere. Would somebody be kind enough to post it here for me? Thank you!

WHAT IS THE ROSARY?
"…it is essentially a meditation on the life of [Mary’s] Divine Son. The Rosary is a combination of vocal prayer (the Our Fathers & Hail Marys) and of mental prayer, namely, reflection on important events in the life of Christ and His Mother.

When one refers to the Rosary, it is usually understood to mean five decades, or one fourth of the entire Rosary."

HOW TO PRAY THE ROSARY

  1. *]Make the Sign of the Cross and say the “Apostles’ Creed.”
    *]Say the “Our Father.”
    *]Say three “Hail Marys.”
*]Say the “Glory be to the Father.”
*]Announce the First Mystery; then say the “Our Father.”
*]Say ten “Hail Marys,” while meditating on the Mystery.
*]Say the “Glory be to the Father.”
*]Announce the Second Mystery; then say the “Our Father.” Repeat 6 and 7 and continue with Third, Fourth and Fifth Mysteries in the same manner.

The Rosary is what is called a ‘prayer rule’, in other words it is based on a series of repetitions of shorter prayers. These shorter prayers are usually written our in their entirety in those guides to saying the Rosary.

They include the ‘Our Father’ or ‘Lord’s Prayer’ (that’s the one Jesus teaches to His disciples in scripture) the ‘Hail Mary’ (a prayer to His mother Mary) and the doxology or ‘Glory Be’.

So when you see, for example ‘say 10 Hail Marys’ that means you repeat the prayer that begins with the words ‘Hail Mary’ ten times over.

Before I started RCIA, I certainly knew of the Rosary, but never really understood what it was. I thought it was a Catholic form of Mary worship with lots of repetition like the Bible proscribed. Now, I know better.

I’m no expert with it, but I have been saying the Rosary daily for several months, and join the group Rosary at my local church when I can. I have since learned that it is merely a tool, and not for Mary worship, but for meditative worship of Christ. I’m in my fifties, I really didn’t think a new form of prayer would exist for me, but I was wrong. I actually look forward to the daily Rosary. Sometimes I do it before I get out of bed in the morning, sometimes I do it just before turning out the light at night. It can be a great way to head off to sleep! I also enjoy doing it when I’m spending tons of time on the Interstate; I’ve even done all four sets of mysteries.

If you can afford it, I’d heartily recommend buying a DVD called “Rosary Stars”. It will walk you through all the mysteries, hosted by actors, journalists and athletes who believe in, and practice, the Rosary. It was a huge help to me and costs around $20. I do hope you enjoy it as much as I have, and join many centuries of others.
