October is generally dedicated as the month of the Holy Rosary, and today (Oct 7) is the feast of the Holy Rosary.

It got me to thinking - what special dispensations/graces are attached by the church to the praying of the rosary (private or public)?

thanks for the information 🙂

One can gain a plenary indulgence (total remission of the temporal consequences of one’s sin - in effect have no need to go to purgatory after death) by praying the rosary in particular circumstances:
  1. pray five decades in one sitting
  2. in church or an oratory, or in a group such as one’s family
  3. having received the sacraments of confession (within the week before or after praying the rosary) and holy communion (on the same day as praying it)
  4. also praying at least an Our Father and a Hail Mary for the Holy Father and his intentions
  5. in a spirit of complete detachment from all mortal and venial sin (this is by far the most difficult requirement!)
If one tries but fails in one or other particular and doesn’t gain a plenary indulgence, one still gains a partial indulgence.

One can gain one of these plenary indulgences each day, but can gain as many partial indulgences as one can pray rosaries.

I think that’s the biggie - any other benefits would positively pale by comparison with the idea of avoiding purgatory altogether!

Thanks Lily M, Just on point number 3, I went to confession yesterday (serious sin) and I made the resolution that I would return to the practice of praying the rosary daily. This may be a hard one but on point 5, how can I be assured of ‘complete detachment to sin’?

Well, you can’t really, any more than you can be completely assured of salvation. Like salvation, you must simply pray and hope for detachment from sin, and trust that God wants eagerly to give this gift (as with all His good gifts) to those who ask for it.

Be assured that if you don’t have complete detachment from sin you will nonetheless receive a partial indulgence for your rosaries, provided you are in a state of grace (ie not conscious of any mortal sin on your soul). So they will still certainly obtain lots of graces for you (or for a soul in purgatory if you choose to offer it for them) regardless.

Although there are many blessings associated with praying the rosary, what typically comes to my mind are the 15 promises of Mary. (Which I am sorry to say I know of, but don’t have them memorized). I find booklets on the mysteries helpful in my rosary meditation.

Oh, did you hear? in 2000 the time period for applicable confession was stated to be about 20 days before or after the work. This means you can use one sacramental confession for very many plenary indulgences, just as long as you are in the state of grace by the completion of the indulgenced work.

Location: Church, oratory, family, religious community, or associaton of the faithful, or with several faithful gathered for some honest purpose, or live broadcast of the Supreme Pontiff.

Also devout meditation on the mysteries is to be added to the vocal prayer.
Public recitation the mysteries must be announced in accord with approved local custom. In private, it is sufficient to join meditation on the mysteries to the vocal prayer.

Can you quote your source for this list? I’m not trying to be argumentative, but I didn’t know that simply praying the rosary in one sitting would grant a plenary indulgence.

I’ll look in my copy of the Raccolta, but I’d appreciate your source as well please.

The latest edition of Enchiridion Indulgentiarum, fourth edition, 1999 is here, in Latin. See grant 17 for the Rosary:

Prayers to the most Blessed Virgin Mary

§ 1. A Plenary Indulgence is granted to faithful who
1 ° [29] piously recite the Marian Rosary in a church or oratory, or in the family, in religious communities and in the associations of the faithful and in general, when many are assembled for an honest purpose;
2 ° the reading; of the same prayer, while is carried out by the Supreme Pontiff, and with the help of an instrument of radio or television transmitted, unites the godly themselves.
In other circumstances the indulgence will be partial.

There is a certain form of prayer of the Rosary, by which fifteen decades of Hail Marys, preceeded by the Lord’s Prayer, distinguishing each of these, preserving our pious meditation on the mysteries recalled.

In regard to a plenary indulgence for recitation of the Marian Rosary these are prescribed:

a) The recitation is sufficient for only the third of the part concerned; But the five ought to be read immediately;
b) the spoken expression of the mysteries is joined with the pious meditation;
c) the public recitation of the mysteries, of suitable phrase, ought to be approved according to the custom of the place; in a private but the public reading of it is sufficient that spoken expression of the Christian faithful be joined with the meditation on the mysteries.
