Quick Rosary quesiton here…

I was wondering if it was ok to use a rosary to pray all the prayers of the Rosary (Hail Mary, Our Father, Glory Be,etc.) while NOT meditating on the mysteries? For example, if I could pray those prayers on the rosary beads and be praying for something like conversion or when praying for someone? Basically simply using them for other things besides the Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, etc?

Thanks and hope I wasn’t too confusing!

You could, by I don’t quite understand why you would. If you want to pray for someone’s conversion then you just say, before you begin to pray The Rosary “I offer up this rosary for the conversion of ___________” or “With this rosary I pray for _______ because s/he needs _________”. The rosary can be offered up with mysteries, you don’t have to be thinking all the time about Person A.

Or you can incorporate them into your contemplation. For example:

The Annunciation: Am I doing all I can to speak the gospel to Person A? Was there a time I could’ve acted like the Angel?
The Visitation: Would Person A benefit from a visit with me as Elizabeth and Mary were glad to see each other?
Birth of Our Lord: Just as God became physical for us, is there anything physical I can do that shows my faith? Would any of these things help Person come to realize Jesus?
The Presentation: Maybe I could ask Person to attend Mass with me? Ask God to soften Person’s heart to attend Mass with you just as Mary, Joseph, and Jesus attended to their religious duties.
Finding of the Child Jesus: Pray that as Mary and Joseph found Jesus in the temple, that Person may also find Jesus. Reflect on the joy they had when they discovered Him.

Just an idea. I would hestitate to seperate the prayers from the mysteries. Someone once said that the mysteries of the rosary are th soul and the beads and prayers the body - they go together.

AngelRose81:

It is OK to use the Rosary for other prayers.

Although I pray the Rosary often (with the Rosary Mysteries, etc.), I sometimes just ball up the rosary and hold it in my hand and pray some Hail Mary’s without counting any beads.

At this time, I strongly associate my Rosary with:
(a) Prayer
(b) Longing to have Mary, the mother of Jesus, nearby
(c) The Gospel

If you feel the same way, or have similar thoughts I think it is very understandable to want to use the Rosary with all manner of prayers.

Sometimes when I want to be comforted, I just hold the Rosary and perhaps do not pray much at all. But just quiet myself and receive comfort. I consider that angels (who are involved with prayer) are nearby whenever I hold the Rosary. And that Mary is watching or may be nearby as well. So that in itself can be comforting.

THanks for your replies. I probably didn’t phrase my question correctly, I suppose I mean basically using it to count prayers when I’m praying for certain things (even for penance, you know 7 Hail Marys, 7 Our Fathers, etc). I pray the Rosary itself as much as I can, as well as the Divine Mercy Chaple and others.

I guess I was asking if it was ok to use my own set of prayers such as the Hail Mary or Our Father a certain number of times and just use the rosary beads.

Of course it’s fine - I do this all the time!
