Rosary Scapulars?

A lady at church today was handing out rope rosarys that had a brown plastic Mary medal half way around the rosary (opposite the crucifix if it was lying down).

What are these? Ive never seen them before in my life.

They are exactly what your subject title says…

Scapular Rosaries.

Meant to be worn that way you have a scapular and a Rosary on at all times. I know of a woman who custom makes them.

I don’t know if it is just a coincidence or if it is a Fillipino tradition, but she is Filipino and I have seen them in Fillipino owned Catholic supply stores…

Did you get one for yourself?
 
I’ve never heard of or seen these before either. I did a google search and came across this website:

The website seems a bit bare bones. They have a section on the “History of the Rosary Scapular” (which is the only link on the site that does not link to their “donate” page), but this is all it says:
The Rosary Scapular was first inspired by the rosary that our Blessed Mother Mary gave to St. Dominic. Traditionally, the rosary cannot be worn around the neck because it was considered irreverant. However, the rosary scapulr was created to not only pray the rosary, but to also protect us from the devil by wearing it around our necks.

Not exactly a detailed history. They even misspelled “scapular”!
 
anymore information? I can get one i fi want, one of my friends has one and asked me if i wanted one… but i wanted to ask around first and figure out what i was getting.

I couldn’t find any more info out there on the internet. Perhaps the history of the Rosary Scapular isn’t any more complicated than the fact that someone somewhere decided to combine the two marian devotionals into one item. 🤷 Simple Sinner’s comment that they may be of Fillipino origin seems plausible.
 
The description sounds a lot like a Chotki/Prayer Rope of our Orthodox friends. I wonder if there is a common connection way back somewhere to that.
 
maybe i am describing it poorly… it is essentially a rope rosary with a plastic crucifix, but half way around the circle (between the 2nd and third decade) there is a plastic brown mary medal.
 
yes it is similar, but those decades look all messed up… they dont equal 10 at all… i’ll have to check my friends next time i see them.

So, that is a rosary scapular then? Which scapular is it? Do you have to treat this object differently than you would other rosaries, etc? I do not know much about scapulars to start with

I think that it’s hard to see all the beads because the rope criss-crosses at two points in the picture. If you held it in your hand, I’d bet that there are probably ten beads for each decade.

I’m not sure which scapular it is. I would assume that it could be made with any type of scapular. If it were me, I would probably treat it as a scapular that you can also pray as a rosary, but someone else might treat it as a rosary that you can wear like a scapular. It’s like the old, is a zebra black with white stripes or white with black stripes. 😉

The rosary and scapular individually both have a rich tradition that has been talked about by many saints and popes. As a combo deal, I don’t think anything has probably been written, but what applies to both individually could probably apply to the hybrid.

The way I look at it it, if it helps you, use it. If not, then don’t.
 
This is not complicated. It is a scapular that is connected to a rosary.

This is a pious tradition wherein the person wearing such has confidence that he or she receives the graces of wearing a scapular, and the graces of always have a rosary on them.

It is no more complicated than that.

I know a woman who hand sews scapulars. For an additional $10, she will knot the cord of the scapular into a Rosary so that he or she who wears it will always have about their person a Scapular and a rosary. It is just that simple.

I personally wear a scapular with a crucifix, St. Benedict’s Medal, Sacred Heart Medal, and Miraculous Medal affixed to it and have done so since my grandmother gave me one. I wear a knotted twine rosary around my neck also in the tradition of the African missions wherein the missionaries would make rosaries from knotted twine that the native people of Africa would wear around their necks as the native dress of the people did not have pockets. If I should ever happen to leave home and forget my wooden bead rosary, I always have the twine one around my neck that I only remove when bathing.

There isn’t much more to it then that.
 
After reading ASimpleSinner’s post, It reminded me of what I was thinking of doing. I was thinking of somehow putting different medals on my Scapular. I was going to ask is this allowed? Can we place medals and things on our Scapular? Mine is of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Thank you.

Yes that is just fine. Some are sold that way.

If you really wanted to have each medal on a different rope or chain when your scapular is on a perfectly good cord, you could do just that… But why risk being so tangly?
 
Yah, I was going to like string them on the main felt thing. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks. (Yours is very nice by the way! 🙂 )

from what i understood scapulars were a felt type material… this is a plastic medal… THey look very different, no?

Yes, normally they are cloth.

Yes, sometimes cloth scapulars are encased in plastic for durability.

Yes, that looks like a plastic medal.

Yes, there is allowance for scapular medals

No, there has never been any miraculous stories about scapular medals.
 
So, your saying that most likely there is felt inside that plastic housing?

Really FP, I don’t know. if it is like the one in the picture I posted, I doubt it. If you want to wear a Rosary scapular with a clothe scap, you can have one made. If you want to wear a cloth scap and a rosary, you can wear them seperately, that is what I do…

You will have to look at it to see.
 
Mine is in a plastic “sleeve” or housing like thing. It if felt, but I believe the pictures are some kind of paper or something that is sewed on.
