Does it matter whether a person prays either the Rosary or the Divine Mercy Chaplet more often than the other? Do they have separate purposes or provide different graces? Thanks in advance.

Isn’t a person’s spirituality up to them?

Both are good, who is to say which is better for one for each occasion or another?

As seemingly specific and detailed the Catholic Church appears I can’t say I ever got the impression that prayer was given a numbers rating. But, I could find out I am wrong.

Not a numbers rating per se. But it is true that the Rosary has not only been endorsed by Our Lady in numerous apparitions, it has also been recommended by many many Popes in encyclicals and other writings - there’s a list of 'em as long as your arm at tomsdomain.com/rosary/id19.htm. So there would seem to be a lot of weight of Magisterial muscle behind the Rosary.

But then again the Divine Mercy Chaplet hasn’t been around for the centuries the Rosary has - and is also richly endowed with graces and promises. St Faustina for one seems to have been drawn more to it than the Rosary. Not to mention our Eastern Catholic brothers who have their own rich centuries of tradition behind the so-called ‘Jesus prayer’ rather than the Marian Rosary.

So I don’t think anyone should feel badly for preferring the Chaplet to the Rosary.

I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but the Divine Mercy Chaplet pertains to God’s Mercy, whereas the Holy Rosary is a more versatile prayer.

Lily, why do you call it the so-called Jesus prayer?

That prayer is older than the Rosary.

My bad - I simply meant that it is also called the ‘Prayer of the Heart’. And it is indeed, significantly older (at least older than the Rosary in its present form, as the Rosary has gone through several changes).

I’d like to say, thank you sister in Christ, but until I can- thank you Lily M for being honest with your reply, and kind.

You are a good example.

I have a question! Where in The Bible does it instruct Christians to pray the rosary? I know the Buddhists and Muslims use pray beads. But I do not find any Biblical evidence that supports Christians praying with beads or the rosary.

hi!
Can you tell me what is non biblical about the words prayed in the Rosary?

The Bible doesn’t give us the Mass in its current forms either - but it DOES command us to celebrate the Eucharist, and gives the Apostles and their successors power to bind and loose as to the form(s) the Eucharistic celebration takes.

Same with prayer - the form of the Rosary isn’t laid out in scripture, but we are certainly told to pray unceasingly, and many different forms, including the Rosary, exist by which we can do so.

And the Rosary is extremely scriptural. First of all we meditate for each decade upon a Gospel episode - from the Annunciation through Christ’s ministry and Passion and Resurrection through to Pentecost. Even Mary’s Assumption and Coronation have some base in scripture, particularly Revelations.

Then the prayers themselves. Of course the Our Father is scriptural, and so is the Hail Mary. The first half of the Hail Mary is entirely taken from Gabriel’s and Elizabeth’s salutations to Mary, the second half is a prayer of intercession, and scripture encourages us to seek the intercession of others.

Here’s a few links you might find interesting. The first is a Biblically based discussion of the Rosary:
davidmacd.com/catholic/mary_rosary.htm

The second is a Biblical citation of every word said in the Mass:

Hope you find these sites useful.

To answer your question directly: No where in the Bible does it instruct Christians to pray the Rosary. As was mentioned above, it is a private devotion.

Please though, let me ask you a question: If we are only going to look to Scripture to tell us what to do and not to do to pray, would not the primary verse be Matthew 6:5-6, wherein Jesus himself tells us:“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.”
So by Scripture alone, should not we all be only praying alone in our rooms? Where in Scripture does it tell us to gather and worship together? In fact, doesn’t Jesus specifically tells us NOT to pray in synagogues/churches?

Of course not. But this is what happens when you look to Scripture alone instead of looking to both Scripture and the Traditions of the Church.

The Rosary is the scourge of the devil. Every Catholic ought to pray one third of the Rosary (at least) every day. The Divine Mercy chaplet is more of a preferential thing. My mom and one of my brothers pray it every day as well as the Rosary, I do not. I use two different chaplets.

I don’t get it.

Blessed Virgin Mary to Saint Dominic, “One Day through the Rosary and Scapular I will save the World”

"Whosoever dies clothed in this (scapular) shall not suffer eternal fire.

This is Mary’s Promise made July 16, 1261 to Saint Simon Stock.

The devils revealed to Francis of Yepes, the brother of St. John of the Cross, that three things especially tormented them. The first is the Name of Jesus; the second, the Name of Mary, and the third, the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. “Take off that habit,” they cried to him, “which snatches so many souls from us. All those clothed in it die piously and escape us.”

Your SCAPULAR, then should take on deep meaning for you. It is a rich present brought down from Heaven by

OUR LADY HERSELF
“Wear it devoutly and perseveringly,” she says to each soul, “it is my garment. To be clothed in it means you are continually thinking of me, and I in turn, am always thinking of you and helping you to secure eternal life.”

Prayer of St. Simon Stock
Known as the F LOS CARMELI, the following prayer has for seven centuries been called a prayer to the Blessed Mother which has never been known to fail in obtaining her powerful help.

Prayer
O beautiful Flower of Carmel, most fruitful vine, Splendor of Heaven, holy and singular, who brought forth the Son of God, still ever remaining a Pure Virgin, assist me in this necessity. O Star of the Sea, help and protect me! Show me that Thou art my Mother.
Code:
O Mary, Conceived without sin,
Pray for us who have recourse to thee!
Mother and Ornament of Carmel, Pray for us!
Virgin. Flower of Carmel, Pray for us!
Patroness of all who wear the Scapular, Pray for us!
Hope of all who die wearing the Scapular, Pray for us!
St. Joseph, Friend of the Sacred Heart, Pray for us!
St. Joseph, Chaste Spouse of Mary, Pray for us!
St. Joseph, Our Patron, Pray for us!
O sweet Heart of Mary, Be our Salvation!

The Fifteen Promises of Mary to Christians Who
Recite the Rosary
Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the rosary, shall receive signal graces.
I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the rosary.
The rosary shall be a powerful armour against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.
It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the rosary, shall not perish.
Whoever shall recite the rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life
Whoever shall have a true devotion for the rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.
Those who are faithful to recite the rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plentitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise.
I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the rosary.
The faithful children of the rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in heaven.
You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the rosary.
All those who propagate the holy rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.
I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestal court during their life and at the hour of death.
All who recite the rosary are my sons, and brothers of my only son Jesus Christ.
Devotion of my rosary is a great sign of predestination.
(Given to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan) Imprimatur:
+PATRICK J. HAYES. D.D… Archbishop of New York

WHY the daily rosary?
Our Lady has 117 titles. She selected this title at Fatima:
“I am the Lady of the Rosary”.

St. Francis de Sales said the greatest method of praying
IS - Pray the Rosary.

St. Thomas Aquinas preached 40 straight days in Rome,
Italy on just the Hail Mary.

St. John Vianney, patron of priests, was seldom seen without a rosary in his hand.

“The rosary is the scourge of the devil” - Pope Adrian VI.

“The rosary is a treasure of graces” - Pope Paul V.

Padre Pio the stigmatic priest said: “The rosary is THE WEAPON”

Pope Leo XIII wrote 9 encyclicals on the rosary.

Pope John XXIII spoke 38 times about our Lady and the Rosary. He prayed 15 decades daily.

St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort wrote:
“The rosary is the most powerful weapon to touch the
Heart of Jesus, Our Redeemer, who so loves His Mother.”

If you wish to obtain a favor: -
Pray THE “54-day ROSARY NOVENA”…
Pray 3 nine day rosary novenas - 27 days of petition;
Pray 3 nine day rosary novenas - 27 days of thanksgiving.

Will you give 1% of 1440 minutes each day to God?
If so, pray the daily rosary in 15 minutes - 1% of 24 hours.

Later on, give 3% and pray entire 15 decade rosary.
Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries.

The problem with your argument, is that you assume it is required of a catholic to pray the Rosary.

It is not.

I don’t know if you have a problem with the Jesus prayer,or the Divine Mercy chaplet— or not- but for now I will assume that you don’t care for the devotion of the Rosary.

Don’t pray it then.🙂

Peace to you

Monica

The Bible does not instruct us to pray the rosary, but the mysteries of the rosary and the prayers are in the bible.

I think it was Fr. John Corapi S.O.L.T that said something like ‘If you read the gospels, then why not pray the gospels’
