Rosary while driving?

I don’t drive, but do a lot of walking. My daily Rosary is often prayed while walking to work. And, when travelling with fellow Catholics on a long trip, I have been the one that lead our Rosary.

The only problem I would have with praying while driving is the contemplation of the mysteries. I don’t have them memorized and would need a reference to look at. Bad idea while driving.

There are some very good CD versions of the Rosary - I own two … one has a narrator reading Pope John Paul IIs meditations on the scriptures that correspond to the mysteries and two other voices praying the rosary … Another one I have has reflections done by a priest and he and Dana [lovely Irish voice] say the prayers and she sings a tansition - I have not listened to that one in years because it predates the Mysteries of Light - that was the reason I picked up this new one that has all four and the JPIIs reflections …

We have a Catholic radio station [KBVM] dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary as you can tell by the call sign 👍 … they broadcast the Rosary several times each day [English or Spanish depending on the time of day], the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and other prayers …

So, pray unceasingly and without worry … .get a CD to guide and assist you in your meditations and forget the beads to free your hands …

I spend lots of time on the road at times - prayer is a God send - pun intended 😉

Ditto on the calming, healing, etc … when I had a job where my commute was 40 minutes - I prayed the Rosary every morning - along with KBVM at 7:00 AM - I was always calm on the drive and a better supervisor for the effort … though when our parish priest challenged each family to have one representative attend one daily Mass a week for 3 months - that one day a week really made the day not only start well but the entire day I was invigorated … and I often times wish I could participate at Mass every day or even once a week … sadly - that is not my life at this time … but I take the opportunity when I can …

I love praying the Rosary while driving. I’ve encountered many graces from it, including better driving, calmer driving. I just have to remember NOT to close my eyes like I do when I’m praying it at home! 😉 (KIDDING!!)

I have various Rosary apps on my phone, plus different ones on CD from the internet (Free!). Father John Ricardo has some on the web (somewhere…I can’t recall where) that are very good.

Yes, I do sometimes pray the Rosary while in fairly heavy traffic.

I can think, talk, sing while driving…why not talk to God?

I see many posts on CAF where people post that they say the Rosary while they drive to work. They seem proud of this.

I wonder if this is just as dangerous as texting while driving. After all, you are not supposed to “say” the Rosary - you are supposed to “pray” the Rosary. It is not a matter of reciting the Our Father and Hail Mary many times - the purpose is to meditate on the Mysteries of the Rosary.

How can you do this while traveling in traffic - possibly even on a highway? I don’t think that you can.

:blessyou:

I agree with you, I prefer to say…‘Pray the Rosary’ as opposed to state ‘saying’ the Rosary…but I have heard Priests say ‘say’ the Rosary…we might be splitting hairs here…but I love splitting hairs…however…I pray the Holy Rosary almost perpetually, yep…walking the dog…driving to/from work…at work,in my head…in the shower…admittedly,it’s not always easy to focus on the mystery sometimes…given outside interference…but my heart is there…not everyone might be capable of staying focused…but…it is possible…I also go to the gym and pray while working out…pray un-ceasingly…Incidentally, I pray the Rosary in Latin…and…understand what I am saying…the Holy Father actaully recommended that Catholics learn the basic prayers in Latin…one might argue, ofcourse, the more Liberal (for lack of a better way of stating it) that one might pray in swahelle or any other language…but…Latin is ancient and beaufitul and is the language of the Church…o.k. Greek also…but Latin as we know in the West…tks for question…PAX

I think personally for me i would find it too distracting to say the rosary while driving…if my mind is on praying then it isnt fully 100% on the road and all it takes is a lapse in concentration for an accident to happen

I pray the rosary on the way into work and have done so for almost 7 years. I pray the Chaplet on the way home. I would not compare that to texting. One can contemplate the mysteries while driving just as they could comprehend a radio talk show host. To pray the rosary we do not have to go into a deep meditation to make it beneficial for our spiritual life.

If you think that in the car you are only “saying” the rosary, I say that it is much quieter than praying with 6 kids ages 15 to 1 month…with a very active 3 year old that likes to entertain his siblings while we pray.

I propose a compromise. Let’s combine the two so EVERYONE is included. Let’s all SPRAY the Rosary while driving.

I often pray the rosary while driving. With a busy work day and a house full of kids, it’s the one place I can concentrate. of course, it’s better to pray it before the Blessed Sacrament, but that opportunity doesn’t always present itself.

St. Paul tells us to “pray without ceasing”. What better way to sanctify our commute than to offer the Rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet while driving?

I pray the Rosary while driving, and I still medated on the Mysteries,as long as I keep my eyes on the road, Texting is differtant, you must look at what your writting, were when I say my Rosary,I have it in my hand,to were it doesn,t interfere with my driving.

By multitasking, I suppose. Keep one eye on the road and one the the Lord, eh?

You don’t hold the beads, I assume. But the rosary isn’t necessarily all-consuming mentally, unless you pray it that way. You can recite the prayers, think about the mystery, and work your car, just as long as you are quite good at all 3.
As far as the beads are concerned, my future daughter in law game me one of these little gadgets: catholiccompany.com/oxidized-one-decade-finger-rosary-p2001126/?sku=2001126&AID=178&aid=none&device=c&network=g&matchtype=&gclid=CNTJ78eehLwCFW3NOgodvmwAfw

I put it on my finger and rotate it slightly through the decade. It’s always on my key ring and when I want to use it, I slip it off the ring and onto my finger.

Praying while driving isn’t as meditative as praying in the Chapel or even your own home but it’s still good for the soul. I don’t find it distracting and greatly enjoy the experience.

I drive a lot and am rarely in a rush. I’m very laid back behind the wheel and don’t follow too closely to anyone. There are a lot of other things I could be doing that could be more distracting and I feel very safe doing this in the car.

My journey to work is short. I often start ‘praying/saying’ the Rosary as I leave home, am about half-way when I get to work; as a teacher/administrator, there is seldom a moment to pray during the working day (other than a ‘Hail Mary’ en route to a parent meeting, parent phone call, or any other potential difficult situation), so I resume the prayer on my way home.

No need for beads, I have 10 fingers. If traffic gets bad, or there is some other situation, I simply cease my prayer, as I would do a conversation if I had a passenger in the car. If I need my GPS I do not try to pray then either.

BTW, when I was simply a teacher and having regular playground duties, I made sure to be saying a Rosary during those times. Made it easier to be super vigilant, not to chat to fellow staff members and to be really gentle with the students. (Somehow, “Hail Mary, full of grace…” does not go well with, “You Little Monster, Get Down Off That Swing Right Now!” but does lead to, “You have had a turn on the swing, now it is time to get off and give someone else a turn.”)

I have a rosary cd that also contains divine mercy chaplet. While driving, I put in on. This is not as mediative as praying the rosary in a more calm place.
I prefer this to listening to the radio, as it is a reminder and keeps me connected throughout the day, and puts my mind where it should be.

I also pray the rosary before bed, and have a problem with falling asleep, so I am careful not to meditate while driving. I focus on the prayers.

It is nice that you listen to Divine Mercy CD,but is on the disk play in the car or do you have to listen to with it with ear phones to your head, because if you have it to loud you might not here the Sirens going by,or in what direction their coming form.to were holding a Rosary in your hand loosely,at least you can her them coming ,so you can pull over,or stop if they are coming at a Intercetion.

This is in the car cd player and comes out on the speakers of the car. I think earphones would be dangerous.

I got it on Bud Macfarlands website-catholiccity.com and it was free. Just wanted to mention for those who have a cd player in the car or at home. It is very nice.

Our parish made a CD of both clergy and laity praying the rosary and handed them out as Christmas gifts two years ago.
I think they are still available on Amazon today.

I use it to pray the rosary in the car all the time.

I find it easier to pray in the car because I’m far more distracted at home thinking about all the stuff I have to do…or tending to a two year old and an infant all day.

At least in the car I’m strapped in and heading for my destination…the baby is usually asleep and the toddler is occupied with a book or a game.

Much easier to concentrate on the mysteries that way.

BAD IDEA!
Meditating on the Mysteries requires concentration, almost like “day
dreaming” the Gospel, and if you’re doing that in the car, you’d better
hope that gets you to Heaven as you might not reach your intended
destination.
I’ve prayed a Byzantine or Russian Rosary with the hundred times
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner,” and
so forth while driving, I don’t think that’s as deep, no day dreaming,
that ought to be fine, just be careful of the steering wheel.

Take this for what it’s worth; I know what it’s worth to me, personally.

In the midst of a long (for me) 4 hour drive today, I decided to pray the Rosary (wide open interstate). Before doing so I noticed that I was going to need gas at some point before arriving home (short about 2 gallons to make it home), which was fine, as gas was cheaper on the interstate than at home.

I decided that after I finished praying my Rosary, I’d get off on the next exit; I knew of a few exits that would be coming up within the next 30 minutes, although I didn’t know where I’d be at that time. I just knew I’d get off on whatever exit after I finished praying.

Right as I finished my Rosary, I came upon the exit that had the cheapest gas that I’d seen thus far, and remembered it from the first half of my trip 2 days previous. I pulled off, and got gas. I said my last prayer as I pulled up to the pump. Okay, no big deal.

Weather had been chilly, but nothing adverse. I had no more pulled onto the on-ramp for the highway than rain started pouring, as well as wind. Immediately, I thanked God for providing this perfect timing to avoid the rain and severe high winds. About 20 minutes later, I saw another exit for gas, and it was slightly cheaper. I thought, “Oh, I could have gotten gas a little cheaper, but oh well!” The rain again that second started pouring, and more wind! Okay, I got it! Thanks again, Father.

During this drive, traffic was not difficult, but had the usual annoying truck traffic. A semi slowed my trip down a bit as I was praying my Rosary, as he slowly, slowly passed another semi truck (2 lanes; I was stuck behind him). I didn’t get annoyed, but figured that I supposed to slow down a little bit for whatever reason. Had that truck not pulled out to pass, and slowed me down by a few minutes, I would have passed that exit, and had to get gas in the wind and rain miles past, instead of in, Kingdom City. Hmmmm, nice name for a city, don’t you think? 🙂

God may not care about the rain or the wind or cold, but He knows that I do. All good comes from God, including the small things.

Very often, my Rosary concludes at whatever point it needs to. I often use a recording on Laudate when driving (being concerned about where I was in the Rosary would be distracting for me personally), so it should be the same length of time each time, and I don’t always ‘start’ the Rosary at the same spot of driving, yet it ends just when it needs to.

God, thank you for Your Gifts, both big and small. It’s been an amazing few days!

Thank you for this story-- isn’t God caring about us!!!\

Reminds me of a trip I took from Dayton to Cincinnati to take a large load of foods given by my Parish (St. Francis Catholic Church) to a new Convent being established. They were 4 Sisters of St. Clare.(Cloistered Poor Clare’s). My gas tank read about 1/10 of a tank, but I had “dedicated” my car to the Blessed Virgin to protect me. This was back in 1990. So, I prayed the Rosary all the way to Cincinnati and reached the Convent. They helped me unload the car, then fed me a very nice large lunch. (I had very little food at home, and only could eat bologna that week, once a day.) They then gave me a 100+ year old Crucifix from the Sisters of Charity which had been left in the Convent. (I have it in my living room still). I then drove back to Dayton, with my tank reading “empty”. I reached home safely, praying the Rosary all the way back. I didn’t get my pay for two more days, and had no money for gas. That car, which had 100,000 miles on it, ran for two more days on empty. When I got paid, I went to get gas, and it filled up all the way – there was no gas left in the tank at all! The Blessed Mother protected me. I had volunteered to take the food that trip, not knowing I didn’t have much gas. How wonderful she was to me! I drove all that way, and 2 more days on an empty tank of gas! I now dedicated any car I have to her, and sprinkle a bit of Holy Water on every car I have with a prayer, asking her to protect me, and to prevent an accident, and help me use the car for her and the Church. The only accident I’ve ever had was when a deer jumped on my car at night, and the Insurance paid for all the repairs, which weren’t severe. What wonderful care she takes of me, especially when I pray the Rosary while driving!! :signofcross:
