I did not think because of copyright reasons the RSV-CE (Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition) Bible was available online.

But isn’t this it?

Handy reference!

And who’s to say that EWTN isn’t paying a nice tidy royalty fee for having it on their site?

And is it just me, or is the copyrighting and then charging of for using (aside for actually printing costs, if need be) of Sacred Scriptures sinful. Freely you have received, now freely give.

The National Council of Churches is Protestant – they 1) think Catholics think we and buy our way to heaven (which we don’t think) and 2) you need Scripture to get to heaven (sola scriptura) and 3) our charging for Scripture – thus you need to pay to get to heaven. How is that not hypocritical to say the least.

I’m not crazy about it either, but it is a copyrighted translation. I’m sure these pastors pay for their books and CDs giving you their interpretations, or they will charge for books of Scripture passages on which to meditate. Do Christian bookstores give Bibles away for free?

I’m sure I read a post here once concerning the EWTN RSV-CE, saying it isn’t the full RSV-CE?

I’m sure they said it is a mix of various editions, or something.

Like I said, I have no problem charging for a printed Bible, because their are printing costs. And let me ask, what would you think if they charged you a fee (or outright prohibited) everytime you wanted to hold a Bible study or cite a verse. Pretty outrageous, huh!

But compared to that, providing the texts on the internet costs the provider almost nothing (especially when those small costs are amoritized over a vast audience).

To me, charging someone else when they want to re-distribute a Biblical translation is tantamount to charging admission to Mass.

You read rightly, Matt; the RSV-CE, 1965-66 edition, is NOT online. What IS online is a hybrid of the RSV with the 2nd ed. NT (1971) with only a very few of the “Catholic” renderings mixed in.

Thanks for pointing this out.

If, for example, in Romans 9:5, the Holy Spirit is later referred to by “which” instead of “who”, then it is NOT the Catholic edition.

If, in 1 Cor. 6, the phrase “sexual perverts” appears, instead of “homosexuals”, then it is not the RSV-CE.

When in doubt, grab you hard-copy RSV-CE and compare it to what’s online.

Copyright rules still apply.
