No. Merely translating them correctly.

So are you saying the Vulgate, D-R, Geneva and a slew of other Bibles weren’t translated correctly in the first place

Oh yes. They suffer from many problems that have since been rectified by the latest studies. “Blessed among women” is one. The so-called Johannine Comma of 1st John 5:7 is another.

Even your “blessed are you among women” has been removed from Luke 1:28 in the Nova Vulgata in light of the most recent studies because it is abundantly clear that it doesn’t belong there.

The reason I am not happy with not only the RSV-CE but others is the fact that the words “Blessed are thou among women” are missing at the end of Luke 1:28. I know that it is also in there in Luke 1:42. To me it diminishes the Immaculate Conception. Can any explain(in a reasonable manner) to me why it wouldn’t diminish the Immaculate Conception by omitting the “Blessed are thou among women”? It is clearly stated in the following Bibles(both Catholic and Non-Catholic) Latin Vulgate, Douay-Rheims, Geneva, Bishops, Tyndale NT, Wycliffe and Coverdale. I don’t know about the Confraternity.
Are they in the original texts?

The KJV says “…for thine is the kingdom the power and the glory now and forever” at the end of the Lords prayer, and its not even in the original text.

I’d like all the “original text” believers to show photographic evidence of the “original texts”.

They can’t! Why? because there are many ancient texts but none of them came originaly from the biblical authors.

Where there are differences in those ancient texts someone somewhere has to decide which one to believe and which one not to believe.

St. Jerome was a saint–that is he lived a life of heroic virtue and was commissioned by the pope to be a translator.

No modern scholars can claim that.

Why is it that they should be believed–many of whom may not even be in a state of grace and do not see the scriptures through the eyes of the Catholic Church as taught over the centuries by its magiasterium and interpreted through the lens of sacred tradition–

Yet St. Jerome should not be believed?

Is that to say that St. Jerome perfectly translated or got everything right?

Of course not–but just tell me this–does a saint with the commission of the pope and living when some of those “original language texts” which no longer are with us today have precedence over non saints who don’t see through the eyes of the Catholic Church but through their own heretical upbringing?

Is there really such a thing as TRUE biblical scholarship apart from the fullness of Truth?

Is the unfullness of truth to be believed all things being equal against the Fullness of truth?

And why should the Opinions of modern Protestant scholars hold precedence over those Protestant scholars who came up with the KJV in cases where the SAME “original texts” were used?

Did you know that there isn’t a great volume of texts older than the ones used back in those times and did you know that even if an “Original text” variant is older that that in no way means it is more accurate?

Should biblical scholarship proceed? Can we make the bible more accurate? Yes!

But please don’t tell me that the biases of the RSV’s Protestant scholars didn’t color their textual choices that they made when it came to ancient textual variants!

Everyone is in favor of Accuarate ancient orginal language texts.

Saying with certainty that we absolutely know which variants are accurate and which are more ancient and which are more credible is an entirely different thing!

When such things cannot be know with certainty I will trust the heroic St. Jerome–living in a state of grace–commssioned by the pope many centuries ago on matters of doctrine over the guesses of non saint Protestant scholars ANY DAY!

Well, I always appreciate the dozens of questions you argue trying to prove your point, yet you, and some others, rarely answer any of the questions we propose. It is kind of like you are trying to “question” us into submission. I certainly try to read your questions, and others, and give it genuine, and honest, consideration. However, I unfortunately don’t see that reciprocated. Instead, the answers are usually a list of the same points, sometimes packaged differently, yet always going back to the same old responses.

St. Jerome is a Saint! Yes, I think we know that. However, there are many thousands of people who died who aren’t recognized saints, yet have made wonderful contributions to Biblical Studies over the past 2000 years. Perhaps those who helped translated the original Douay-Rheims. Maybe even Fr. Knox, who translated his very literary edition of the English Bible early in the 20th century. Who know, maybe some of those people who helped to make the Jerusalem Bible…Tolkien comes to mind. (How dare them use the original languages of Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic!) Hmmm…And I dare say that even a few people who worked on the RSV or any other “modern” translation, who were Protestant, were welcomed into our Fathers mansion. What makes this whole discussion so interesting is that you will champion Trent and St. Jerome, yet your ears remaim closed to what the Church is saying now, and has been for the past 50+ years…which by the way does not contradict the constant teaching of the Church. I know you believe that.

Yet, if I were to logically follow your argument, we would have to suggest that our current Holy Father, prefers to have his English translation books to use the “heretical” RSV-CE. Hmm…I am not sure that sits well with me. And lets not forget the wonderful gift that is the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Could not Joseph Ratzinger or JPII used some other translations than the RSV/NRSV for the scripture passages? Surely, there could have been a translation from the Nova Vulgata…which is the official Latin translation of the Latin Church (which by the way heavily relies on textual work done by modern Biblical scholars in light of the Greek and Hebrew originals.) Yet they did not.

Sorry mate, but I am going to follow what the Church says.

The Church commands original-language studies and has very unflattering words for those who refuse. That’s good enough for me.

If you have a problem with that, take it up with the Pope.

If I am going to read the RSV-CE I might as well as consider myself a Catholic Protestant I still have seen absolutely no ENGLISH articles stating that the RSV-CE is better and more accurate than those of times past, nor have I seen the documents that have claimed to better more ancient and better and more accurate. My statement stands

You and that other “Catholic Protestant” - Pope Benedict XVI - would then both be using the same translation - RSV-CE. Oh yea, add Cardinal Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in the Roman Curia, to the list of “Catholic Protestants” - as he granted the Impimatur to the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible Series by Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch, which certifies that it is free from error in matters of Catholic doctrine and morals, and hence acceptable reading for faithful Catholics. It is based on the RSV-CE.

All your ranting and raving about the RSV-CE being “protestant” is placing you at odds with the Magisterium of the Church. Maybe you don’t care about that, but it’s something you should take seriously.

The only reason it is considered Catholic is for the fact they added the deutrocanonical books and add Catholic Edition on the end of it. Other than that it is just like any other Protestant Bible.

Then the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is composed of Protestants. Pope John Paul II was also a Protestant, and so is Pope Benedict XVI.

I’m in good company.

I guess I’m a protestant too then. LOL

If John Paul II (the Great) and Benedict XVI are protestants, then I am too. 👍

(Satire alert - I think there is a problem with the original premise; that these two great Popes are protestants is clearly ridiculous, as is implying that they are protestants because they use and approve of the RSV-CE.)

(I feel like we are at the end of the movie Spartacus) 😃

All I am implying is that I don’t feel like Catholic reading this translation. I feel like a Protestant with the RSV-CE. What will the come up with next?? The NIV-CE??? I see this translation no better than any modern translation out there. There really isn’t much Catholic in as it is a Protestant based Bible. I don’t want any bit of Protestantism in my mass. I don’t think that the RSV-CE is Better and more accurate by any means. I have no proof that they are. Just a bunch of people shooting there mouth because I don’t care for the translation. I simply don’t care for the RSV-CE.

Good for Jimmy. Just because he uses it and endorses it Doesn’t mean I will use it or endorse it all. Just beacuse the Pope uses it, also doesn’t mean I will use it. I don’t even find the RSV-CE that great of a translation anyway. The day I use and endorse the RSV-CE will be the day when all moral standards become corrupt.

🤷

That last sentence is quite funny. Actually I think the whole thing is! 😃 I am sure you are intentionally exaggerating.

I am still waiting for someone to actually tell you to abandon the Douay-Rheims for the RSV-CE. Once again, no one has. We are simply stating the current state of biblical scholarship in the Catholic Church. The Church has embraced and encouraged Her sons and daughters to do biblical research and translations using the original “Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic”. If you don’t like that, it is not anyone elses problem except for you. You can just consider yourself at odds with the current direction that the Church is going in regards to Biblical scholarship.

By your standards, I guess I will just continue reading my RSV/NRSV translations, which makes me a morally corrupt protestant.

Go ahead and read them. It isn’t for me to decide what you read or not. I just gave my 2 cents on staying clear of the RSV-CE and wanted to know if there was anyone else that didn’t care for the RSV-CE. If that upsets you that I don’t care for the RSV-CE, so be it. You are never going to convince me to read the RSV-CE and I am never going to convince you not to read the RSV-CE
