Hopefully someone can clear this up…

I have downloaded the free Bible study software called e-sword (available at www.e-sword.net). They have several Bibles that can be downloaded, however most are Protestant except for the Douay Rheims version which I find very difficult to read.

I would like to download the RSV version using a third party software that is available but apparently there are copyright issues.

My question is this; If one purchases a hard copy of the RSV, would it still be illegal and therefore immoral to download a soft copy for personal use ???

God Bless

Javier

I am not an expert, but I do have some knowledge of copyright law.

In my opinion, the answer to your question is no (i.e., such use would *not *be illegal or immoral), IF there is no way to directly buy or license a software version of the RSV.

But if there is a way to directly buy or license a software version of the RSV, then I think you’re legally (and therefore morally) obliged to use that option.

The reasoning underlying this conclusion is that, if the holders of the RSV copyright are offering a software version for sale or license to individuals, then that’s the means by which they want individuals to access the software, and generate income for themselves thereby; it would be, for them, an entirely different revenue stream than that produced by hard copy sales.

There is. You can get the NAB & RSV-CE both on the same CD-ROM from:
