RSV Online!

I know how hard it is to find the RSV-CE online, but I managed to stumble upon a website that has the RSV translation of the Bible online and it includes the Apocrypha. I personally enjoy the RSV-CE, and I know a lot of people on these forums do as well. Now, the website doesn’t provide the RSV-CE, but it does provide the RSV and Apocrypha, which is close enough. It also has a neat feature where you can view, side-by-side, the RSV and the KJV, useful if you ask me. I hope you enjoy it, if you haven’t found it already.

Thanks so much for the tip.

I picked up a copy of the RSV-CE compact edition - whew - small font, hard to read. But, the translation has a nice fell to it.

I can’t wait until they decide to put out a large print study version, if that’s ever in the works.

RSV-CE compact edition? Well, I’ve got two copies here, one for travel and one for home. The one I have for home has large print, a concordance, Biblical dictionary, notes, and much more. It’s really wonderful, though expensive. It is absolutely beautiful!

That same site also has Catholic Study Bibles, but it’s mostly the New Testament and only in individual books (The one I linked is the Gospel of Matthew). They do use the RSV-CE though, so it may be worthwhile.

And you’re welcome. I rather enjoy the RSV-CE, so I try to advertise it whenever I get the opportunity. I’ve also been searching for some time for an online version of it, and thus know how difficult it is.

The RSV from the link provided: etext.virginia.edu/frames/bibleframe.html been pulled due to respecting a copyright held by the National Council of Churches of Christ. A link to the RSV can be found at: geocities.com/sacra_scriptura/eng_bible_index.html. I personally don’t have an RSV Bible and was wanting to compare it to translations that I do have. I have not checked the accuracy with which this online version provides. I apologize if in any way it is not an accurate or faithful translation. Please let me know the fidelity of the translation.

If it’s the “generic” RSV you want, including the Apocrypha, try this site:

The “Biblia Clerus” site (se thread at head of the Scripture forum) is alleged to have the RSV-CE. But if you search through this Scripture forum, you’ll find there are a few translations out there, online and in print, purporting to be the RSV-CE. The genuine RSV-CE (1965 NT, 1966 OT) can had in the Ignatius Bible (blue soft- or hard-cover volume). Scepter Press also has one.

As you can find throughout numerous posts on the forum, the RSVCE versions are not really determined by publisher, but rather the particular layout or version of the bible itself. The compact editions have the 1965 (first edition) RSVCE changes applied to the 1971 version of the New Testament.

The larger, more typically sized bibles are the original 1965 RSVCE…except for those labeled as “Reader’s Editions,” which are mostly 1965 versions, with a few changes from the compact versions still present. It seems that an attempt was made to correct the compact situation in the “Reader’s Editions,” but that the ‘reversion’ was not fully accomplished.

And finally, there is the Ignatius Press RSV2CE (second Catholic edition) which is an Ignatius Press exclusive and is different from the original RSVCE in both the Old and New Testaments.
