Yes, lots of new rubrics have been introduced since Pope Paul VI. For example, there is a 2002 Roman Missal, a 1984 Ceremonial of Bishops, a 1984 Book of Blessings, a new Roman Martyrology and a new liturgical book for Exorcisms.

My concern is the rubics of the Mass…if there was a new rubics that was mandated by the Holy See…Does the supercede the Pope Paul VI version…or does all rubics apply at the whim of the celebrant.

Well, it’s a bit tricky. In the US, for instance, we don’t yet have the new Sacramentary from 2000 in English, so if the Mass is in English, it’s using an older edition of the Sacramentary (from 1975). We DO have the English GIRM for the new Sacramentary, though, so which means a priest could be following the new “general instruction” while using the old Sacramentary.

For example, the 1975 Sacramentary says that the priest holds the Host up over the paten when he says “This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper.” However, the 2002 GIRM says that the priest can hold the Host over the paten or over the Chalice. Thus, you might find a priest doing it the new way, even though he’s using an old Sacramentary.

You’re going to need to be a little more clear, please.

There is not yet an English translation of the newest revision of the Roman Missal, so they are allowed to continue using the older revision until the translation is complete.

Are you aware of the origin of “hocus pocus”?

It’s an irreverent paraphrase of “Hoc est enim Corpus Meum.”

For that matter, “Jack in the box” was originally a mockery of the Reserved Sacrament.

Bishop Elliot also wrote a very good book called “The Liturgical Question Box.” This is an excellent book. You can find it on Amazon.com (probably in the used book system).
