Hi there

On reading these message boards I’ve heard a lot of talk along the lines of ‘…it’s in the Rubrics that…’

Pardon my ignorance but what does this mean? What exactly are the Rubrics - is it some kind of official document, and if so, can I see it anywhere?

Thanks for your patience!

Here is the General Instructions of the Roman Missal

United States G.I.R.M.

As I see your location is UK, I think this is the one you want:

England and Wales G.I.R.M.

And just a point of information, the word rubrics literally means “red” - the rubrics are the part printed in red in the Missal - the part that tells you what to do, as opposed to the part printed in black, which tells you what to say.

I’ve noticed that some missals have more rubrics than others - is there a definitive guide somewhere, something issued by the Vatican perhaps - something with everything in it?

Thanks again

The Sacramentary is what you want to look at to see all the applicable rubrics for the Mass. Any missal that you have is a condensed version of the Sacramentary. The Sacramentary is the book that the priest uses for the prayers of the Mass.

👍 I think this is what I’m looking for - where would you see this. Is it only available in churches? Can I see it written on-line somewhere?

It’s purely out of interest - I like to understand the actions and follow exactly what’s going on. So many actions in the mass have specific reasons behind them - I’d like to understand more.

Thanks for your help

I never knew this. I’m going to stump my hubby with this! 🙂

IF you go to your church and ask the priest if he can show you the sacramentary, and point out the GIRM and rubrics, I am sure he would be more than willing.

Be careful when you do this though, as some priests might think you are trying to find something they are doing wrong.

You can buy a copy on the Internet, but they are rather expensive.

I got a copy as a gift from a priest, so I know what’s going on now.

In Him, through her,
Pio Magnus
