I’m a Syro-Malabar Catholic. My wife converted to Roman Catholicism when we married. Our daughter is going to be baptized soon and we are trying to choose her god parents. We will be baptizing her using the Syro-Malabar rite. Do the god parents BOTH have to be Syro-Malabar catholics?

The god mother we have in mind is a Roman Catholic, but not Syro-Malabar rite.

Thanks.

Please note, I have posted this in the answers section and will be asking the priest when I meet with him next. I just wondered if anyone here could help.

The Godparents† must be Catholic*, and fully initiated. Any Rite, any Church Sui Iuris.

They must be in good standing, and might need a letter from their pastor verifying their being a member, and should have their baptismal and confirmation certificates if Roman, and their Chrismation documented if any other, tho if their pastor can verify from the parish baptismal records, then his letter might be sufficient for both purposes (documenting initiation and current participation).

Only one is required, as well.

The following is an english translation of the Canon Law for the Eastern Churches (CCEO)

That’s a link to canon 685.
  • If there’s good cause, one of the godparents may also be Orthodox, provided there is also a Catholic one.
† Technically, the term is sponsor
