Rules for fasting

I’m sure this has been covered on here ad nauseum but I haven’t found the threads yet about fasting.

What is the age for fasting and abstaining during Lent? Is it 18 for fasting and 14 for abstaining from meat on Fridays?

Where would I find this information in written form? I looked in the Catechism and the GIRM and just found general information regarding fasting and abstinance during lent. I work with teens.

Those ages are correct. You can check the Code of Canon Law around canon 1240.

What happens around these parts is that every year, shortly before Ash Wednesday (I think that’s Feb 22 this year), our Archbishop will have notices posted at each church, often with copies that people can take home, about the particular fasting and abstinence guidelines for our diocese.

Pastors of souls and parents are to ensure that even those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fasting and abstinence, are taught the true meaning of penance.

You are correct.
The 22nd is the day that I will remind my forth grade class that Ash Wednesday is soon and they should be thinking about what to “give up” or do for Lent.
