Sin is a struggle. If sin wasn’t so attractive we wouldn’t do it, right?

Sexual sin is a big deal. Now if you are married and your spouse is aware of your temptation to sin sexually in some way I would expect help from him/her to help you resolve that urge to sin. Basically you and your spouse come up with a plan to reduce the temptation in your life.

If you are not married then change your life. Get very busy doing God’s work. Don’t have time at home alone, be out there, helping people, or something. Get married. Getting married is God’s solution to sexual temptation.

Anyway, what you all should consider is that for every sin, why it is a sin and what God wants you to do instead. It occurs to me that modesty, i.e. how low your neckline is, or how tight your pants are, can usually be solved by your spouse telling you not to go out wearing that. Spouses, or parents, can be darn good judges of what is ok and not ok. Now if you have the desire to show off, fine. Show off for your spouse in a way that is acceptable to both of you.

Sin is the application of our energies in the wrong direction. Take dating, lots of energy. You must see that how you choose to handle that energy is very important. Do not feel bad because the energy is there. If there is a big part of you that wants to do something “wrong” with the person you are going out with fine, you are normal. Talk to the person, set up limits, and then stick to them. Then evaluate how well you stick to those limits. If you do, then you actually love the person you are with. If you do not, then you don’t love yourself, how can you say you love another.

How about going to Mass? Ever get too busy to go and not go? Well then, why shouldn’t God be too busy for you? Prayer is the same, too busy for Him? Why should He listen when you have time?

What God and the Church want for us is that we have the best possible existence. Sin detracts from or experience of life. So when you sin, you punish yourself right there, right now. You don’t need to wait to die.

So, next time you are tempted, before you sin, ask yourself what am I giving up? Am I settling for this bottle of beer when I should be home, taking my kids for a walk then kissing my wife’s neck? Why does this beer feel better than her? Go, right then and there, choose the better choice.

You know, it really might feel better, but that is another story.
