Hey CAF,

Anyone have any experience setting up a parish young adult group in a rural setting? I’ve found some great examples of young adult groups in urban centers but the challenges of starting a group in a rural environment is a tad different I imagine.

peace,

I guess its like anything, it will only take off it fulfils a genuine need: if it does not, it will fold very quickly. It is no use copying another parish’s formula either because your area will be different and the people will be different. By all means canvase others for ideas but remember your group will be individual because your situation will be individual especially as communities in rural areas all have their own distinct characters.

I think it really does depend on where you live, how close the nearest substantially sized university is, how many Catholics in your region in general, etc. Here in Bible Belt Oklahoma, a rural Catholic young adult group south of Oklahoma City would not get very far at all, especially considering the state of our urban Catholic young adult groups. When I lived in the Southeastern part of the state, I was so desperate for Christian fellowship that I often attended a Baptist college group.
