I’m going to go ahead and take a different approach than the other posters, though I do agree with most of them. I think this is not about the priest at all. I think it is about a single mom who has some serious feelings and issues. First you say she wants the father to have nothing to do with the baby, then you say she puts that she does not know who the father is on the Birth Certificate. Well, I am sorry to inform you that the father has rights. The father also has responsibilities. And the child has rights!!! Not only that, but he probably should be involved with this child. For the sake of the child. The fact that he wanted an abortion is in the past and over with. Many mothers want abortions as well and they are legally allowed to mother their children after they are born. Fathers have biological rights, the child has a right to a father, and the father also may have financial obligations to the child and definitely has emotional obligations to the child. And he should be provided every opportunity to be able to fulfill these obligations at any time. Regardless of what kind of scumbag some may think him to be. At one point these two people did something reserved for married couples and life was created.
Now her aversion to questions may very well be a natural and normal thing, but not attending Mass because a priest asked an uncomfortable question is silly and shows a lack of maturity and theological understanding. Heck, my priest asks me very very uncomfortable questions in confession every couple of weeks!
And that is my advice. She should be a regular at confession as should we all. And then the priest might better understand this member of his parish so as to better minister to her and her child.!!!
