Since beginning my studies of Orthodoxy, one of my major concerns was this nationalistic quality. It seems that there is a lack of “universality” to the extent that the Church is tied to local government, language, and customs.
One advantage I see in a Papacy is that there is an authority above all these elements, so that they can be transcended when necessary.

There was a thread, not too long ago, claiming that the fact that the West fragmented after the East-West schism was proof that the East was in the wrong in the EW schism. (I never really understood how that argument worked, but I guess we could say it “sounded good”.
)

I am not 100% sure, but I believe that the argument was that the devil no longer felt a need to attack the East since they had left the faith. Therefore his focus shifted entirely to the Latin Church.
