Would anyone be able to please provide a link (or just the text) of what is said between the priest and the penitent in the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic form of Confession? I’ve done searches online and on these forums but am coming up empty. I’m currently a Latin Rite Catholic but go to my local RBC Church frequently for Liturgy and Confession. For Confession, though, the priest knows I’m a Roman Catholic and when he hears my confession he just has me use the Latin Rite form. I’d love to use the RBC form, though, and need a copy of it to do so (I’ve been able to use that once with a past priest, but that’s it). Any help is appreciated.

Hahaha I still say the act of contrition, the priest doesn’t care.

My priest doesn’t care either if I use the Roman Rite…but that’s not the issue – I care. I really have grown to love the things I already know about the Eastern style of worship, prayer, rituals, etc. I have a desire to learn the Eastern form of Confession as well…

I understand, I was just being silly.

Actually, the priest asked me to say the act of contrition. I don’t know if that’s because he knows I’m RC and was trying to make me feel comfy or says that to everyone.

You might want to ask the forums at byzcath.org. You could also approach the priest at some point, asking if he could help you learn the proper prayers.

I knew you were just being silly - I just wanted to respond. 🙂 Thanks for the suggestion on Byzcath…I do read there just don’t really post. If I don’t get the info here, I’ll have to try that. As for asking the priest, I have done so but there doesn’t seem to be an interest in doing that. I have been steered toward just using the RC form.

If you venture over there, I am Pisces (joined long ago and didn’t want to use that name any longer when I joined here) and my husband is stormshadow. Actually, I could ask HIM if he knows the prayer…duh.

The best online example I’ve seen is on the Greek Orthodox website. They show the long form of penance and act out the whole thing. The person is usually expected to do the prayers before communion on their own and the admonitions are not necessary, but the video shows all the possibilities.

Prayer Before Confession:

I, a sinner, confess to Almighty God, One in the Holy Trinity, to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, to all the angels and saints, and to you, Father, all my sins.

It has been [length of time] since my last confession.

Prayer After Confession:

For these and all my other sins which I cannot remember or call to mind, I am sorry that I have offended God and angered him against me. I am sincerely repentant, and promise with the help of God to better my life. For this, I humbly ask of you, Father, salutary penance and absolution.

Byzantine Catholic style is: once you have completed your examination of conscience, locate the priest and tell him you want to make a confession. The location may vary, sometimes near an icon or some in a room with a door.

Kneel (or stand) before the icon of Jesus Christ and begin with the sign of the cross:
  1. “I confess to Almighty God, One in the Holy Trinity, to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, to all the Saints, and to you, Father, all my sins.”
Say how long it has been, and your sins, in a conversational style. Then, when any counciling is complete, say:
  1. “For these and all my other sins which I remember or cannot call to mind, I am very sorry. I have offended God and have angered Him against me. I am sincerely repentant and promise with the help fo God to better my life. For this, I humbly ask of you, Father, salutary penance and absolution.”
He puts the epitrachelion (a long cloth) on your head (if you are kneeling) and gives absolution, and then says “Go in peace, sin no more.”

Go out and do you penance. I like to also say Psalm 50 privately.

Even if not kneeling, it’s common for the priest to put the epitrachelion on your head even if you are standing. Usually by having you bend over.

Yep, I’ve done this once 👍

I asked if I will kneel, I am a bit surprised the priest said no because I am tall. But he asked me to bow for quite a while, which made me wish I had knelt 😛
