Yesterday was the day for the Senate leadership to release their “Top Ten” legislative issues, traditionally done at the start of each new Congress by the majority party. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) presented the list, which included important issues to family groups, such as welfare and tax reform. Senator Frist also took the opportunity yesterday to highlight Senate Joint Resolution 1, also known as the Marriage Protection Amendment, a constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between one man and one woman. S.J. Res. 1 was introduced yesterday by Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) and 22 original cosponsors.
Sen. Frist drew a clear distinction between himself and the White House, saying: “We have made the Marriage Protection Amendment S.J. Res. 1. This is significant. It shows that we will continue to defend marriage against activist judges. Marriage should remain the union of a man and a woman. Children do best with moms and dads. We must protect the family as the cornerstone of a healthy society. I am hopeful that S.J. Res. 1 will actually pass the 109th Congress and be sent to the states for ratification.”
