Hello. Why did Constantine change the day of Sabbath to Sunday, in the early 300s? Someone told me that Constantine changed the Sabbath from Saturday, and he said that Constantine said any of the Hebrews who were celebrating or worshipping their Creator on Saturday , they are to be put to death. But in the Scriptures doesn’t it say that we should rest on the seventh day, so if you look at the calendar, saturday is the seventh day!

Please explain, and thank you for replies in advance!

Boy, that ‘someone’ is just always such a 100% reliable source, aren’t they!

Scripture itself refers to Sunday as ‘The Lord’s Day’ - see Revelation.

It also makes clear that while early Christians might have gone to synagogue on Saturday, their primary day of meeting was on Sunday - the day of Jesus’ resurrection, the day they met to break bread.

In fact there’s no actual indication that they went to synagogue for worship, or for any purpose other than to meet up with the Jews (of course, since that was the day and place when they’d have the largest crowds) to make converts. Not that it matters if they did.

Point is, Paul in one of his epistles speaks of taking up a collection of money on Sunday. Surely if these early Christians primarily gathered on Saturdays, THAT would’ve been the day to do it, no? Our churches don’t take up their collections on Monday or Wednesday, do they? So the indication was that even in Apostolic times Sunday appears to have been more important, although those Christians who had been Jews probably retained a respect for Saturday too. As we do ourselves, in our two-day (for most people) weekend.

Constantine did no such thing.
Someone told me that Constantine changed the Sabbath from Saturday,
Well, “someone” needs to study up on both their History and their Bible.
and he said that Constantine said any of the Hebrews who were celebrating or worshipping their Creator on Saturday , they are to be put to death.
Constantine did no such thing and did not put Jews to death.

You have run into a very confused individual. The Jewish Sabbath is indeed the seventh day. Christians follow Christ, who was raised from the dead on the Lord’s Day-- which is the first day of the week.

You need to do more studying and less listening to uninformed people.

You seem easily swayed by baseless statements. Perhaps you need to get a copy of the Catechism and start studying.

You have been misinformed. Christians were worshipping on Sunday long before Constantine appeared on the scene. Catholic Answers Tract Sabbath or Sunday has the details.

Some pagan emperors before Constantine sometimes restricted Jews from observing the Sabbath (Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, etc.). However, as far as I can tell, neither Constantine nor any other Christian emperor restricted Jews from observing the Sabbath, though they sometimes placed other restrictions on Jews, such as not holding public office and not marrying Christians. Here we go again. Are you a Catholic? If you are,you seem to be very naive or uninformed about your faith. You seem to have a very poor understanding of Catholicism and you pose questions which seem to be protestant in nature. For example THIS particular question or assertion is usually made by 7th Day Adventists who are not exactly friends of the Catholic Church.IF you are a Catholic I recommend that due to your poor grounding in your faith that you stop listening to non-Catholic or anti-Catholic OPINIONS about your faith and get the Catechism of the Catholic Church and READ IT cover to cover. If I am mistaken,I do of course, apologise.

Lemonbeam, why don’t you answer my question?I can see that your green light is on,so surely you’ve noticed my inquiry?😉

Let’s not be too hard on the poor guy, after all he is a new member. Not all Catholics know the answers to questions they may get from friends and others. Thank God he came here to get some straight answers, let’s not chastise him for it.

I don’t know about you bud,but there seems to be an untoward number of “naive”“catholics” who seem to be posting here and I find just a little too coincidental.I have every right to have my suspicions addressed and if wrong will certainly apologise. She’s on the board right now and won’t address a legitimate and honest question which further reinforces my original suspicion.

In other words, it looks like lemonbeam just likes to post a challenge, then runs off to the next juicy tidbit.
