A picture of the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts by the front door. Plus any patron saints statues or pictures that you like. A blessed rosary, a scapular, a bible. Blessed salt, blessed candles… hmmmmm… Holy cards, and prayer cards for deceased loved ones. A home altar–doesn’t have to be anything super fancy.

Have a priest bless the house.

Wow, I actually have all of those. Well, not a sick call crucifix specifically, but I have two regular crucifixes. And two Bibles as well 👍

Do you think a sick call crucifix is necessary? Doesn’t every priest own one? I should think, but I don’t really know.

My best sacramentals for the home is my icon corner, on which I also have my Bible, prayerbooks, votive candle.

I have a St. Benedict medal on every windowsill, and on both exterior doors. I also have a couple of bottles of holy water in the house, and every now and then I sprinkle the whole house with it. I also have crucifixes and a third-class relic of Bl. Margaret of Castello.

Someone asked about a sick call crucifix (one of which I also happen to have). A sick call crucifix is a two-piece crucifix consisting of a smaller cross and corpus, mounted on a larger cross with a compartment. The compartment in mine contains two candles, a wad of cotton and a small empty vial. (I don’t believe the cotton is used in the post-conciliar rite of anointing – at least it wasn’t the time I received the anointing.) The large cross with the compartment doubles as a stand. You lay it on a table, mount the smaller crucifix on an upright peg in the center of the large cross, and place the two candles in the notches at the ends of the short arms, so that you have the crucifix flanked by candles.

Now see if only knew to do what you are doing, the world would be an entirely different place. 🙂

Related to this important question is - which sacramentals should we carry on our person?

I always get ribbed about this (“Well, Alex, one could wear a ton of medals and then have one’s neck stoop down as you walk . . .”).

What’s a good modicum of sacramentals to have on ourselves for protection etc.?

Alex

I’d suggest no more than two or three out of the following - St Benedicts’ medal, blessed Crucifix, the Miraculous Medal, Brown Scapular or Green Scapular.

I don’t think all of those are necessary. Having said that, though, I HAVE seen scapulars that have a small crucifix and St Benedict medal already attached. You’d really be set with something like that!

Keep in mind that there is such a things as overkill. And that frequent and heartfelt prayer and frequenting the sacraments (going to Mass during the week if you can do so, rahter than just Sundays, for example) is FAR FAR more important in terms of protection than wearing things.
