Sacramentals in your house

Okay everyone, I am going to ask another silly question, but don’t take it that way.

I have sacramentals and little shrines all over.

but what to do about the water closet or the the restroom? Would it be blasphemous?

What would you do; what have you done; why?

So far, I have a tiny crucifix in the corner of the central master bath. It’s hardly noticiable; I don’t know if it’s against a fear of drowning or slipping in the tub, but I like the sacramental there.

One of the legends of the saints, usually said to be St. Theresa of Avila, has her sitting on the can, praying. Along comes the Devil to mock her for prayers while engaged in such a low activity. Her response? “What comes out of my mouth is intended for God. What comes out of the other end is intended for you, Devil.” The Devil’s response to this gift is not recorded.

I myself have an icon of the Holy Trinity, in Native American style, opposite my toilet (which is set up for the squat position rather then the sitting position). Next to the icon is a printing of Psalm 91, which is also my favourite bedtime psalm.

Oh no! I truly don’t think so. Afterall, it was God’s intention that we… uh… “answer the call of nature” whenever necessary. And we know, that all of His plans, are good.

I keep a small statue of Our Lady of Grace in one bathroom. A small framed picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in another. And in my mothers bathroom, there is a small plaque of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

I have crusifixes above all the doors in my home, **all **the doors.
While at a friends house, I noticed that in her bathroom, a very large beautiful framed picture of many flowers out in a field and on the bottom across the field of flowers was written a beautiful verse from the Bible. The only other decoration in there was a basket like pot that contained the same flowers, silk looking ones. Her towels and accesories matched the colors of the flowers. (I am an artist so I notice things like this.)

Thank you ALL for your answers! I just read something by Julian of Norwich about her “purse full fair” and how it’s an amazing blessing design of God how our gastrointestinal system works.

So I feel better. I never meant any disrespect.

I like the idea of a crucifix in every room…I’ll be working on that this weekend…

Not wishing to hijack this thread, but I have a similar question that I don’t think is big enough to deserve its own thread. I too mean no disrespect: Is it permissable to set up a shrine to the eucharist at home? To take home a communion wafer and fashion a tabernacle for it? Reason I ask is its so hard to find a 24 hour eucharistic adoration chapel in this city and would love to spend some time some nights before the blessed sacrament.

Haha this reminds me of the first time I went to the home of a very devout family that I’m friends with. Their house is a shrine in and of itself, and the Mrs. loves to give tours. In the bathroom they have a plate with the Immaculate Heart of Mary on it, and I asked her if she ever felt uncomfortable with Mary watching her in the bathroom.

She replied: “Well, I don’t keep anything from her…”

No, I don’t think this is allowed under normal circumstances, check with your Pastor.

Also, I don’t believe you are allowed to take home the Holy Eucharist…the church has to protect it against desecration. Not that you would ever do that, but how do they ensure that…I think your idea is beautiful tho, maybe do something similar just without the real presence.
Also, I have a palm cross, a picture of St. Michael the Archangel, and another cross with the Our Father inscripted in it…
I think your care to be reverent is to be commended, and now that you know…have fun decorating!!

No it isn’t. By Canon Law you’d need special permission from the Bishop to keep the Blessed Sacrament in your home on a permanent basis.

Remember if there are any churches around you and you have time during their opening hours, you can pop in for a visit. Jesus is just as much there in the tabernacle even if He isn’t exposed for adoration.

As an alternative (though not as good as the real thing) you might want to try savior.org which has online real time pictures of the exposed Sacrament.

But in regards to the OP, I sometimes have a picture of our Lord and a little Thomas Merton prayer on my bathroom mirror. Good little reminder when starting day.

I have a little card of the Divine Mercy taped inside the cabinet over the sink, so when I brush my teeth I can see the image and pray “Jesus I trust in You”. I also have a holy card of Jesus in the Garden taped by the light switch.

I want to find or invent a Shower Rosary, that mounts on the shower wall, maybe made out of color-changing sponge divided into little sections—it would change color from being touched by a wet hand, and then you could keep track of where you are in the prayers. You know, tap the sponge with each Hail Mary. Okay so maybe it wouldn’t technically be a rosary, but something so I can keep track while I’m showering–I can’t keep track on my fingers while I’m trying to shampoo!

Thank you all for answering my home tabernacle question. It’s hard to find chapels that leave the doors open of an evening here, but I’ll see what I can find.

Found a patron saint of running water, which would be great for a bathroom: Saint John Nepomucene, executed for not breaking the seal of confession. ( saints.sqpn.com/saintj17.htm )

Also, I love the idea of a shower rosary - if it hasn’t been invented you must, I bet there’d be loads of people who want one. I wonder even whether there is a bath rosary - beads of pumice held together by the cord they use for sponges.

Oh, Miserissima !
How many times lately have I posted here about that - talking about a small crucifix in my bathroom my Mom put there so many years ago…something sent in the mail probably from the missions, etc. And it’s in the same place - a tiny little corner of a wall, where you almost wouldn’t notice it if you didn’t know it was there. I’d be wondering if people thought it was strange when I posted about it. But I knew my Mom’s intentions were as good and innocent as can be. And having a crucifix in every room of the house ? I think is necessary ! Not to worry. Here, there’s also an Infant of Prague and Blessed Mother Image in every room (except bathroom).

As for sacramentals, etc…Depending on what they are, I don’t know about putting such items in the bathroom (but my Brown Scapular stays with me) - However, my house is filled with holy statues, pics, sacramentals and relics. Growing up with many of these in every room, I always took it for granted but I’m thinking some people must have been surprised at so many religious images throughout !

His first question to me was this" I don’t mean to be too personal, but are you Catholic?" Yes there are religious icons in my bathrooms too! Including prayer books, never can have too much reading material in there.

Story to tell. My good friend is a devout Roman Catholic who has sacramentals, paintings, and statues in every room but especially in the living room. It is Our Lords house first and they are given prominence. Really beautiful and spiritual home.

Well, on Holloween a little boy knocked on her door and said , “trick or treat.” My friend began to give him candy but he didn’t pay any attention. His eyes were mesmerized on all the religous figures in her home. Finally, he looked at her and asked, “Does Jesus live here?”

What a wonderful testament to my freind. Jesus does indeed live there.

How lovely. A family friend of mine visited my apartment for the first time, and while I don’t have stuff in absolutely every room I do have a nice little icon table and a crucifix on the wall in the living room. She looked and said ‘no way the Devil is going to get anywhere near here!’
