Can anyone tell me the proper positioning for the ribbons in the sacramentary? In other words, what colors go in what sections and why if possible. Thank you

Actually, the colors don’t matter. My PV can attest to that. He arranges the ribbons on the Roman Missal according to sections. This means that he’ll use the ribons in their order of appearance so as to keep them from criss-crossing. In fact, he re-arranged the ribbons on my Daily Roman Missal.

Last week, we had a visiting priest come and mess up the ribbons on my friend’s Roman Missal. Needless to say that when he celebrated Mass the next day, he was a little peeved.

Thank you for your reply…can you tell me what are the sections you put the different color ribbons in?

You start with the seasons. Since we’re already into Ordinary Time, you put the first ribbon on the corresponding week in Ordinary Time. Next Sunday is the 17th Sunday, so place the first ribbon there. Then, you go to the Ordinary of the Mass. You place the second ribbon at the beginning. Then come the prefaces and EP. You just go down from there. It depends on what the celebrant wants to “bookmark”.

Good answer.

I would offer just one little amendment, with the understanding that the Sacramentary in question is used for weekday Masses as well as Sunday.

During Ordinary Time, many of the Mass Propers come from the Mass of the Sunday before. Thus, since we are in the 16th Week, I would leave the ribbon on Sunday 16.

(Of course, depending on the edition, the 16th and 17th Sunday may be on facing pages, so that could be the same!)

Regards,
Joe
