Hi,

I’ve always liked the Sacred Heart devotion… so I’m not criticizing it at all, in fact I am a big supporter of it.

But I wanted to ask a question… I came across an Orthodox thread about the Sacred Heart devotion (the Orthodox do not agree with it) and they were saying how it goes against an early Church council that said that we should not worship Christ’s humanity separate from His divinity.

IS this devotion worshipping His humanity apart from His divinity, though??? that is what I’m wondering… what does everyone think? the thing is, I’ve never seen it as such. When we worship Christ’s Heart, it’s not just His physical Heart, but what is meant by that as well… and His Heart is BOTH human and divine! Using this logic, a person might even end up saying that it’s wrong to consider Christ’s Body at all, because it’s part of His humanity. But He is fully God and fully Man… we can’t separate His natures that easily. I’m not very knowledgeable in the early Church councils, and theology in general, can someone clarify this for me?

thank you!

Jesus is one person, not one Divine person and one human person, but simply one person with two natures. Therefore, when we worship Jesus, we worship the 1 Jesus who should be worshiped, we cannot worship part of Jesus without worshiping him entirely. The sacred heart devotion focuses on a human aspect (but does not exclude the divine of course) of Jesus (his physical heart which was pierced on the cross) and gives it an even deeper meaning (his love and mercy).

Hope this is helpful
Tom

The very words of the prayers within that most wonderful devotion should eliminate any worry as to whether it is simply about the humanity. It is the divine love that caused Christ to become the Lamb and the Priest forever, embodied. In a way, the Sacred Heart devotion focuses more on the Divinity while using physical or human terminology and symbolism. At least, this is how it strikes me.

It’s a devotion to the Sacred Heart…not the anatomical heart. I don’t understand the objection.

thanks for the replies! 🙂 that makes sense… I dont know this objection seems to come up a lot
