I was knelt at the communion rail today at Mass waiting to receive when I noticed out of the corner of my eye that a small white fragment fell from the ciborum onto the floor. Nobody, not even the priest noticed this. I panicked and didn’t want to make a scene, so I received and went back to the pew. But I also notified an usher since I didn’t want to interrupt the priest and EMs. It fell behind the rail so I couldn’t reach it. The usher told me that it would be taken care of. But I didn’t see anyone search the area or notify the priest. I’m very worried that I’ve allowed for the Sacred Host to be desecrated.

It’s an accident and sometimes, unfortunately, happens. If the host is still clean it can be consumed. If not, the priest can arrange to dissolve it in water and properly dispose of it. I’m sure you did nothing wrong.

From what I remember from server training, we are supposed to cover the spot/spots where
the host hit the ground with a white cloth (not sure of the exact type, I’m sure there’s a name) so that it doesn’t get trampled, then later wash the spot with water, and dispose of the water in the same way of consecrated items.

You did what you could and it was very appropriate. Be at peace.

As others have said, be at peace. You did the correct thing notifying the Usher.
