Do you use them ? And what about other holy images ?

What do they mean to you ?

What are your favorites ?

Mine are… of course, Jesus as the Divine Mercy… and the Virgin of Tenderness ( some call it Sweet Kissing) which apparently has several variations.

Where do you hang them ?

Has anyone tried a prayer corner or a wall with several ?

We have an icon of Mary and Jesus like the weeping icon. It was a gift from our Priest, I think because my wife is Byzantine and he has an interest in the Eastern rites. It comes from a monestary in NY. It is in a room my oldest sons share. The Priest said at our wedding “the man is the head of the house, but the woman is the heart”. That is what the icon means to me. Tim

I have several. My favorite is Jesus Christ, Holy Silence, where she is shown as a young female angel, serene in her silence. It is opposite my pillow, and the first thing I see when I wake up. I have several other icons around the apartment, but no prayer corner or shrine as such.

When I can find the spare cash, I would like to purchase a large size San Damiano Crucifix for my bedroom
 
Our home is full of them, but then we are Byzantine Catholic. This may seem a bit radical, but the kids know what to do with the icons in case something happens to us, so that the icons are taken care of. I think as we get older, we will just have the kids take them home with them. To me one of the most heart breaking things is to go to someones home, where they are having an estate sale of the such, and see a families icons or statues being sold.

   I know what you mean.. I visited the hermitage of a catholic monk and the time worn icon was so heart rendering.

The San Damiano Crucifix is the one that spoke to Saint Francis, who founded the Third Order based on the rule of 1221. Well, I am in formation with the CFP and BSP, two small private groups living an updated rule of 1221. Seems appropiate, somehow, to have one in my bedroom.

(What I would do if the Crucifix ever spoke to me? Do what I was told, of course.)

    I found this on one of the pages describing the San Damiano Crucifix. Thank you Andruschak for the explanation. I will be getting one at the Oratory gift shop.. they have about 5 different sizes. And Andruschak, if the crucifix ever spoke to you ? You would remember to pray for your friends here right ? I hope so.

    Thank you Patrick, although I am an avid seeker of icon images these are all new to me and the third one is wonderful I think.

        Our Lady of Soufanieh is soooo beautiful !  I agree this is one of the most beautiful icons of the Blessed Virgin.

         Do you know what the story behind this icon is ?

Beautiful! The Icon strongly resembles Our Lady of Kazan (though the style of the Icon of Soufanieh is a bit ‘Western’ influenced):

    Are there any other suggested links to select icons ?

    In the Orthodox faith the Virgin of Tenderness is related to many temporal and spiritual miracles. I try not to distinguish too much as to the faith source...  I think representations of Christ that are holy images or icons have their value regardless of what the source may be. I know many Catholic religious who use icons from Orthodoxy. Some of them (icons) are very inspiring and predispose to prayer.

     The Image of the Divine Mercy is thought to be very ecumenical because it has seemingly eastern and western aspects.

When my husband went to the Catholic Market for our businesses there was a company there and when I walked into their booth I saw a statue of Our Lady of Fatima that stopped me in my tracks! She is made of Porcelain, her face is so gentle, she has a small smile and sad eyes, she is so beautiful! My other favorite is a statue of the Sacred Heart that I ordered from a company I deal with years ago, it’s made of marble and it’s taken from an old picture with Jesus holding His Sacred Heart in His hand. When we evacuate for Hurricanes these are among the first items that get packed. God Bless.🙂
 
Gosh, I’m afraid I don’t know the history of this icon. I do know it’s from the Eastern Rites, or Western Rite, Melkite. Not sure. Very old. Miracles also surround this icon.

And you know … it could be Eastern Orthodox.

I will have to research the actual history, that is who painted this, when, with what. I don’t think it’s egg tempura though … just eyeballing it it looks to be perhaps oil paint???

And yeah, I think this icon is gorgeous and very spiritual. Very warm, welcoming and loving feel to it, isn’t there?
