We’ve just launched an internet radio station broadcasting Catholic sacred music. Gregorian chant, polyphony, all that good stuff. It’s still very much a work in progress, but drop by and take a listen.

Hope you enjoy!

I forgot to add, we are very open to suggestions for pieces and/or CDs to include in the broadcasts. Thanks.

Awesome! Thanks, Mike. I’ll be listening and I’ll get you a list of CDs shortly.

Mike, I’ve just listened for two hours. You’ve got the mix balance down almost perfectly. And I am glad to hear Christmas music included in the mix. Back when our public radio station was worth its salt, one of the hosts routinely included liturgical music from each season and included choral tracks from the Jewish liturgical year as well which was most interesting.

I must have 30 - 40 choral CDs in my collection. Off the top of my head, there are two CDs I routinely play each Christmas. They are by Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata - A Medieval Christmas and A Rennaissance Christmas Both are still available at Amazon. I also like Telarc’s version of Rachmaninoff’s Vespers. Can’t go wrong with any of Hayden’s Masses.

Thanks – we are definitely going to strive to be season-aware. I’m going to have to learn more to keep from putting season-inappropriate music in the mix. Right now we’re running a 3-hour playlist that repeats over the day. Maybe that will grow to a longer list in the future, we’ll see how much work it is.

And thanks for the recommendations. We have some Haydn Masses here – I’ll schedule a movement or two for tomorrow. And I’ll put the other CDs on the wish list.

Something kind of annoying is that copyright law prevents us from playing an entire Mass in a row. The law forbids more than two consecutive selections, and more than three in a three-hour period. So the law requires that artistic compositions be butchered. I’m still trying to figure out if there’s a legal way around this.

Are you sure about that when it comes to Classical works? I though it would be considered one piece since it is a single work.

This thread is of interest to me and I was going to start one on Sacred Music since I am trying yo add to my CD collection. So far, the only CD’s I have are 3 Masses by Mozart (Requiem, Coronation, and Great), 2 Masses by Beethoven (Missa Solemnis and Mass in C Major), Handel’s Messiah, and 4 Chant CD’s. I am mainly interested in other Mass compositions.

On the subject of Mass compositions, I attended a live concert of the Mozart’s Great Mass by the Detroit Symphony this past Friday. The particular version was the one by Robert Leven. Here is the link to the CD of the version (the conductor on the CD is the same one who conducted the concert I went to):
Mozart: Mass in C Minor - New Version by Robert Levin

I have been told that this is the case, and I have been told that this is not the case. The law specifically refers to “selections” and I have not found an authoritative definition of that word in this context. But the problem is, the upload software that I have to use just assumes every mp3 file is a selection, so if I upload a 5-movement Mass as 5 files, the software slaps my hand. I could string them together as a single mp3 file but I haven’t found a dirt-simple utility to do this (though I expect there certainly is one or more)

I certainly welcome people chiming in with their favorite Mass settings and recordings.

Howdee - had a bit of a listen this morning, great stuff!

Isn’t it nifty, thanks to the lovely internet, to be able to hear the same radio as y’all on the other side of the world!

Who’d a thunk it 👍

What is a .pls file and what program do I need to open it?

Hmmm . . . I could do this in my studio. 👍

I don’t know the details but it is a playlist file for streaming audio. It should open and play automatically in whatever your default audio application is. If it doesn’t work on your computer you can PM me with the details and I’ll see if I can help (50-50 chance at best!).

Pax vobiscum!

This is great! Thanks so much for posting this!

In Christ,
Rand

Mike, after day two listening, I am just overwhelmed. Right now the Kyrie from Victoria’s Missa O quam gloriosum is playing. My choir actually sang this as the Mass setting for our 200th anniversary (cathedral parish). Lots of new music, I’ve never heard but lots of familar favorites too. Very hard not to sing along at work!

Just started listening now, and I like it!🙂 Great timing too, I was just trying to find some stuff here in the house and gave up. Thanks!

We appreciate the kind words. The depth and breadth of the musical tradition of the universal Church is indeed overwhelming. It is fabulous that technology now allows us to experience it in this way.

I’ve been listening for several hours now, and have been enjoying it, which is unusual for me. I usually listen to contemporary christian music.

There was one piece that I enjoyed so much, I clicked on the Buy button, and chose the Amazon option. However, when the Amazon window opened, the message said that there were no results for my search. 😦

Yeah, it’s dumb the way they do that. I think the problem is that the CD and track listings in the Gracenote database (which is where the play info comes from) don’t always match the Album names on Amazon. But I don’t have any control over those BUY buttons. But if you can remember the piece I’ll tell you what CD it’s on.
