Is where the monstrance that contains the Blessed Sacrament at, a sacred or a holy place? If so, which one? Thanks, Tim

Your question doesn’t make sense. A monstrance isn’t a “place” it’s an “object.”

It is a sacred vessel, just like a ciborium or chalice.

I mean “is where the monstrance is placed”. My wife is doing a paper for a History of Sacred Place’s class on sacred place’s visited and was wondering if where the monstrance is, is that considered a sacred place. Thanks, Tim

Are you asking is the Adoration chapel a Sacred place? Yes. I’m sure that the Bishop has Blessed it and the altar the monstrance sits on.

It sounds like what is being asked for are sacred places that can be visited. Like Lourdes is considered a sacred or holy place, Assisi would be a holy place. Specific sites in the Holy Land would be considered Sacred places. A Catholic cemetary would be considerd holy ground. Any church, shrine, oratory is a sacred place. The entire church is a holy and sacred place. Usually the altar is where the monstrance is placed. That is a sacred object within a sacred place, the church.

Thats it. Thanks for the answers. This class recognizes a differance between what is considered sacred and what is considered holy. I thought it would be a sacred item in a “holy” place. But it seems that the chapel or alter is “sacred”. Tim

You may also wish to look at the code of canon law beginning with canon 1213 and concluding with 1243. This section treats sacred places.

This will provide you with an understanding of what a sacred place is, how something becomes a sacred place or ceases to be one, what the kinds of sacred places are (church, oratory, private chapel, shrine, altar, and cemetery) and the different acts of divine worship that may be conducted there.

Can you spell that out a little more? I’m curious about this distinction.

From a course document that just touches on their definition. The course itself is to go deeper into their meanings, which has just started.

Holy - A special quality of purity and goodness distinct from the profane; it is associated with the sacred, and often conferred by it.

Sacred - “Things set apart and forbidden,” (Durkheim), or a reality that exists beyond regular activities.

They just sent a 6 page unit 1 overview that defines the distinction, but the forums can’t handle an upload in word that size. It’s an online class at WVU. Tim
