Hello all,

I’ve just been married and moved into an apartment with my hubby, and I’m wondering how many of you have “sacred places” or altars in your home that you use for prayer. If you do, I’d love to hear about it. Where is it, what does it contain, how do you use it? Pictures would be lovely too. 😃

I’m hoping to get some ideas for my own. I think of a little table with some holy pictures, statues, and prayer books, and maybe a pillow before it so I could kneel there. Maybe in a corner. I have seen those miniature one-person kneelers but they are pricey! 🙂

I have an ‘altar’. It was once a TV stand, but when I decided I wanted this altar I found it in the garage, cleaned it up and voila… On the wall behind it is a crucifix and on either side are two tall tapered candlesticks that I try and keep matched to the liturgical colors. On it I keep a bottle of Holy Water and a box of Blessed Salt, some saint medals, crosses, and a rosary, a card from my grandmother’s funeral, my LOTH’s book, a catechism and statues of Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus in the manger (from our nativity set. Get more use out of it! 😛 ). I keep cloths on the the ‘altar’ too that match the candles (the white one is embroidered by the before-mentioned Grandmother).

In the cubby where the VCR would go I have cards with prayers, the extra candles and cloths, some books on saints, the rosary and theology, my baptism and confirmation certificates, and a lighter.

In the bottom is a cupboard where I have my stereo with some gregorian chant CD’s.

Lighting candles and hearing monks chant in the background can really change your experience of prayer. The entire thing didn’t cost very much either: I had the table, candlestick holders, statues, holy cards, bottle, box, catechism, stereo, medals and rosary. All I had to buy were the candles and some handkercheifs that I use as the cloths (except for the white one), the crucifix and the chant CD’s. If you look around you’d be surprised at just how much you actually have. (Obviously the water and salt cost nothing).

My Entire apartment is my sacred place with crucifixes, statues, religious pictures, nativity scenes spread throughout the place including both bathrooms.

My husband acctually obtained one of those one-person kneelers (there’s probably a name for them) before we were married. I think there were renovations going on in his parish and they were getting rid of some stuff including the kneelers. Kind of a neat thing to own.

My sacred places are in two main areas. At the front door, I have a bust of the Virgin Mary, a house scapular, candles, holy water, and blessing oil, along with one of those biblical quote of the day thingies. In my bedroom, I turned a TV tray into a private alter, placing a white store bought doily on it. On it I placed a crucifix, some candles, statues that have meaning to me, holy water, and a blessing cup. I have other statues all over the house. I have statues of the Blessed Virgin in my rose garden. I have crucifixes at every door and rosaries in the windows. Your alter should reflect what you want, believe, and desire. If you’re into patron saints I say go for it…Good luck:thumbsup:

I was confirmed this past Easter. I have been looking for ways to improve my prayer life so I set up a prayer area. I use an old aquariam stand. There is a crucifix on the wall, a statue of Mary, a Divne Mercy Statue, and a candle. I also keep a bible and my rosary displayed on it. So far it has helped me keep my focus on prayer especially when praying the rosary.

That is wonderful that you want to start your married life by having a sacred space in the home. 😃 I tend to change my prayer space constantly…😛 At present it looks like this now below:

I decided to chuck in my huge bed for a smaller twin size one so that I can have a larger prayer space / slash / spiritual reading table in my bedroom. My mother says that if I continue at this rate I will probably get rid of my bed altogether and end up sleeping on the floor. lol

The cheapest portable kneeler that you can tuck under your bed that I have seen is about $35.00 It is called a “prayer cushion” at the website but its a heck of alot cheaper than many of the portable kneelers I have seen that go for $110 at other websites.

Here’s what it looks like:

I hope that the sacred space you create in your home brings you and your hubby much peace.

God bless

wow, Maryam. I love it!
I like the big image of the Divine Mercy and all of them!
Have you got a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I have one that is as big as your Divine Mercy.

😃 … I got a Sacred Heart of Jesus picture on the wall on the other side of my room…its half the size of the Divine Mercy picture which is about 18 x 22… Where did you purchase your Divine mercy picture?

God bless

 Such gorgeous photos. Thank you for all the ideas!! I’m formulating our space in my mind 🙂

Maryam…thanks for the link on the private kneelers. I was going to go rummaging for scrap lumber at a constructions site, but this is going to be much better. 🙂

I have an area my living room. I really need to replace the computer with a kneeler, but for now…that’s how it is. In my bedroom, I have a rocking chair next to a small table with the Magnificat and other books that I am reading and a Sacred Heart of Jesus candle.

oh wow, Jenny. I like the wall of your house. It makes me feel like I am in a chapel. It would be awesome when you get the kneeler and have computer set somewhere else.

All are nice especially the picture of the Holy Spirit.

Thanks for sharing.

PS: I don’t have a pic, but you can imagine my room is a mess. 😃 When I am about to move into new apartment and have place for myself, I plan to decorate my praying corner.

St Josemaria Escriva reminds us that in the house of a married couple the greatest altar you can have is the marriage bed.
Remember this well.

Thanks. I am trying to find a place for the computer. hmmm. I guess I have plenty of time. I don’t see a kneeler in my immediate future.🙂 My DH made the holy spirit picture. He is quite talented.

wow, he is talented. I had thought you bought it somewhere!
If you get a little computer desk and move it to where the Statue of Virgin Mary is. After moving the computer and printer, that place can be used for the statue.
