Sacred scripture proof of the doctrine of Communion of Saints?

 I am looking for someone who can tell me anything about the official church teaching on the following.

 I believe that Matthew 16:18 is a direct reference to the Communion of Saints.  Here's how.  First, I'll put the verse up (from the New American Bible):
** Matt 16:18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my
church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.**

First point: I looked up the Greek word that is translated church here. The word is ekklesia with the definition “a popular meeting or a Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both”.

Second point: “The gates of the netherworld” would seem to me to refer to physical death. If this is the correct interpretation, this seems to me to mean that physical death will not prevail against (separate?) the church.

Any thoughts?

Do you have examples of where ekklesia can refer to saints in heaven? I can’t think of any.
 
Eph3:14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
 
Heb12:22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels 23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
