I am in the midst of a conversation with a non-Catholic regarding Sola Scriptura. I almost have him convinced of the problems with that belief. I used several passages to refute his claims but I am now looking for several concrete examples of Tradition that do NOT appear in the NT. The one that I used is in regards to the end of “public revelation”. We both agree that public revelation ended with the death of the Apostle John around the year 100. However, that fact is nowhere in the Scriptures.

Do any of you have other specifics that I can use that supports a Christian belief that is NOT in the NT.

Thanks, Although the Trinity is alluded to the Celebration and dates of both Christmas and Easter are good examples!

Hi.

Catholic apologist Mike Shea has some great examples in this article that may be of help.

Just because the words The Trinity are not in scripture does not mean that the concept is not in Scripture.
But what those verses mean are very subject to interpretation (as several centuries of debate in the early church demonstrate).

The most obvious tradition that isn’t found in Scripture is the table of contents.

The form of and requirements for marriage is another common example.

He sure does Spenc:

“And so, many people (even those who making the paradigm shift to a shaky belief in Sacred Tradition) still labor under the vague misperception that Catholic think Tradition is a separate, secret and parallel revelation transmitted from bishop to bishop at the Secret Tradition-Passing-On Ceremony all bishops go through in the dark chamber of Initiation in the Inner Mysteries beneath the Vatican (“Psst! Mary is Immaculate, Ever-Virgin and Assumed into Heaven, pass it on!”) and leaked to the Church when Rome feels the time is right to tell the ordinary schmoo in the pew.”
