Yesterday, someone relayed the startling news that then Pope Benedict XVI made a sacrifice to the Blessed Virgin Mary during a Christmas Mass in 2010 at the Vatican. He swears he saw it occur live on television. A goblet had been given to the Vatican. He doesn’t remember the giver/donator but seems to feel it was used in connection with this.

The way he describes it, I’m thinking this would have happened prior to Holy Communion. But I can’t find anything online about it or if he may have misheard, gotten several events mixed up or just thought a sacrifice was being made to the Blessed Virgin.

Can anyone help with this? I’d like to be able to give him the facts.

You aren’t going to find anything online because your friend is describing patent nonsense.

Are you saying that your friend knows something “different or strange” occurred. He doesn’t know what it was, but he saw it. You want to find out what it was that he saw and explain it to him. Does he have an interest in knowing this himself?

Pure nonesense. Neither the Pope, nor any Catholic, nor any Christians make sacrifices to anyone. Christ has made our sacrifice for us. Period, end of debate. Your friend doesn’t know what he is talking about.

Ummmm, priests offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass every day. True, it is the one and same Sacrifice that Our Lord made on Calvary, but as the Alter Christus, a priest offers the same Sacrifice daily.

Yes, but only to the Father. Nowhere, ever, will you find any Catholic sacrificing anything to Mary or the daints.

Sounds like a misunderstanding concerning the Eucharistic Prayers. 🤷

Yes, I’ve searched those as well. Nothing. He now says it happened towards the end of the Mass. So I’ve paid particular attention from the Eucharistic prayers on and still nothing. I even checked 2009’s Masses. I do feel he misunderstood the events of the Masses since he isn’t Catholic. He’s still adamant it occurred.🤷

It is up to him to waste his time looking for evidence of an event that couldn’t have occurred.

Well, then, he’s the one who needs to provide proof. Tell him that since he can’t, you’ll have to assume he’s mistaken.

Some people swear that Catholics worship Mary and the Saints, worship some “pagan sun god” and other weird trash. We only worship God and offer our lives as sacrifices to God. In the Mass Christ offers to God through the priest (with the congregation united with him) his Sacrifice on the Cross, his holy Body and Blood. Christ has no need to offer Mary anything, and the idea is just grotesque. It’s at odds with the whole understanding of Redemption and Christ’s offering as love.

Some people swear that Catholics worship Mary and the Saints.
BUT, we have to admit that some individual Catholics DO take devotion to Mary or a Saint a little too far.

I heard a priest from Ireland on EWTN radio talking about “Mary’s plan”. I gotta say, I was uneasy with that one.

Does this person speak Italian? It sounds like he may be lacking context, language skills, and a basic understanding of the Catholic Mass.

That seems like one of those ambiguous phrases like “Co-Redemptrix”; it’s right, but open to way to much misunderstanding, not to mention not Scriptural.
