Can someone explain the purpose of Jesus to me in a way that i can explain it to a pagan? My friend is a pagan and he always wants me to explain my faith to him because he wants to be Catholic, but he just doesn’t believe in it. He asked me why Jesus is important, and how come the jews in the old testament didn’t need him. I couldn’t really find the right words to answer him. thanks.

Also, another question that is a bit related:

How come God didn’t mention the Trinity to His people until Christ? The jews don’t believe in the Trinity, how come God didn’t just start off His religion with the Trinity?

Since we are just creatures we cannot do anything to affect God in any substantial way and make us worthy of His presence, unless He participates in our elevation.

So Jesus had to come to make humanity able to come to Him.

Or else it is just pretty much a waste of time for God. Which is why any service that doesn’t involve the Holy Sacrifice of Jesus is pretty much just a feel good service and shows our devotion, but any worship requires a re-presentation of the one Sacrifice of Jesus to God.

This is simplified but pretty much it for why the necessity of Jesus becoming man is part of the plan of Salvation. And why Catholicism is the only true faith.

That is the quick concise explanation, now about God’s overall plan maybe someone else can explain that as I have to do some other things right now.

God Bless

But the Jews of the Old Testament DID need Jesus. The old covenant specifically anticipated a Messiah, and many recognized Jesus as Messiah when he came in the fullness of time.

Why didn’t God reveal himself as Trinity from the outset? Because God often acts with mankind as a teacher acts with children. We don’t try to teach them calculus until they have learned basic addition and subtraction, and worked their way up through increasing levels of knowledge.

After the Fall, and a decline of mankind into polytheism, the first lesson that had to be relearned is the Oneness of God. There is only One God, not many. That truth had to be learned indelibly, before God could reveal himself as three persons, but one God.

So what happened to all the faithful jews before Jesus?
Although not many are formally canonized, we recognize many of them as likely saints in heaven. They were faithful to God’s covenant with them.

And also recall the words of the Creed, that Jesus, after his death “descended into hell.” Not the hell of the damned, but the abode of the dead, where those faithful Jews who had gone before awaited his coming. To those, he preached salvation, and brought them to his kingdom in heaven.
