Hello, I am wondering if it is sacrilegious to eat unblessed communion wafers. I like the taste of the wafers when I receive communion at mass and thought they could make a good snack to enjoy every once in a while. If I purchased some that are unblessed this means they are not Jesus’ body and just bread at the moment, but I am wondering if this is considered sacrilegious since they were created to be used a communion and not as food.

Thank you.

No. I think it’d be sacrilegious if not blasphemous to try to pass 'em off as the real consecrated Host.

It’s just bread. It’s perfectly fine to snack on it.

It is called the antidoro, it is given out to the people while the priest anoints their forheads.

It is the norm in Eastern Catholic Church. Here’s a little more information.

I googled Antidoron and it says these are blessed but not consecrated. The ones that I would get would not even be blessed. It would be straight from the manufacturer and sealed in a box. I, of course, would not try to pass these off as consecrated or blessed communion since that would be VERY wrong.

If you begin to associate the host with casual snacking or whatever you do when you have a snack (e.g. watching TV), then what sorts of thoughts will you have when you receive Holy Communion?

I didn’t think of this. Thank you.
