Forgive me if this belongs in the Water Cooler forum but I thought this audience might better know…

I was wondering if anyone knew of any sacristan or sacristan assistant jobs that will be available this summer in the Greater Toledo (ohio) area. I am a college student and no one (not even retail or food service) wants to hire a student who will only be home for a couple of months. I have one (very) part time teaching job set-up (I am a music student), but that isn’t enough to support me for a summer.

Thanks.

I’ve never heard of a paid Sacristan. Around here, they are all volunteers.

Check the Diocese and Parish websites for job openings.

Do you play the piano or organ? You might consider working as a “substitute” musician for churches in the area. Many people…including musicians in Churches take their vacation in the summer. Maybe you could do that?

I was a paid Sacristan for ten years but my job also entailed the responsibility of being Church Custodian of my parish. Jack of all trades master of none except cabinetry. Both jobs entailed far more than a dictionary will define it. But I loved it until my health got terminal.

We have HS kids as sacristans on Sundays. Basically all they do is set up for Mass and clean up after. Not much of a job around here. They do their homework while Mass is going on.

Why don’t they attend the Mass?

If they are assigned for a Sunday some go to Saturday night Mass. Some set up for the early Mass and go to that one since they are not often called upon to do something extra at that Mass while it is going on (since it is the “quiet” mass), except to deal with the collection.
