Safety of the Pope

The Pope will go to your country soon, do you pray for his safety ? I do …
and also for his safety when he comes to France afterwards (in mid-September )…
mainly because he has recently been threatened by Al Quaeda … ( I mean Bin Laden’s terrorist organization, I’m not sure of the English spelling … )

Prayer for the Pope is important. If you can find the time say an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. If you say the Rosary then include these prayers at the end for the intention (and safety) of our Holy Father.

I can’t pray as you say, I’m a Protestant so I pray only God, and I pray Him with my own words to protect Benedict XVI …( I don’t see the link with saying a “Our Father” for him, or a Glory be or anything else … )

Well I don’t pray for him everyday, moreover for me the expression “Holy Father” refers to God : that’s how I sometimes call Him in my prayers, so I couldn’t use the same expression for a man ; moreover I’m not Catholic( Protestant ) but if I feel somebody is in danger I pray for him …
I also pray for the French hostage in Colombia Ingrid Bétancourt … all the more now as it seems she has serious health problems … she’s been a hostage in the jungle for 6 or 7 years…

If the Lord teaches this prayer, it can certainly be used for any purpose. I could use that prayer to pray for the Pope for something I have in mind right now. I just think it simple but here I share it with you.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
→ we always give thanks and glory to His Name in all things we pray.

Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
→ If it is His Will, the Pope will be safe on this trip. whatever the purpose that God is using the Pope’s trip, let it be done according to His Will

Give us this day our daily bread.
→ We ask for spiritual as well as other needs; let’s pray that the Pope’s visit will ignite in many souls’ the desire to love God and people more by whatever means God provides.

Forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
→ Let’s pray for Christian unity, peace of the world. I am sure the Pope always have this in mind. Let’s see what message he will bring to this trip.

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
→ May God protect the Pope from the Satan and those being used by Satan.

I do pray for him on all of his trips. Thank you for praying as well. Even if you do not agree with his faith, he is the most visible Christian in the world.

As far as this country goes, you must understand how New York city works. They have a police force greater than 60,000. They can also call in State police and national guard. Add to that federal law inforcement and others and you get a very sizable group. You also have non-law enforcement entaties that will help, like church members and, as funny as it is to say, the mob. Then you have private people who would do all they can to see that no attack succedes. I can see construction workers or teamsters jumping in to help. Easily. Americans, as a group, are a strange bunch. New Yorkers are more so. Overall, we keep to ourselves and do not want to get involved, but when we do, we tend to go all out. Of the four hijacked planes on 9/11, the only one that had time to react reacted and crashed the plane. It is part of our cowboy mentality: We don’t want any involvement from you, and we won’t get involved without pushing, but you jump one of us, you jump us all. Just look at the reaction when the president of Iran wanted to lay a wreath at the World Trade CEnter site. Common folks from New York made it very public that he would not enjoy the event.

If I pray for the Pope or anybody else in my private prayer moment, then I might say the Lord’s prayer at one moment or another, I might brood on it as well ( add some things in between the words … because I also see that prayer as a pattern, not necessarily as something that must be repeated exactly as it is written, all the more as we don’t have it in the original language , and some translations differ a bit … it is not something “magical” ! ) and then pray for the Pope or somebody else … or my own needs …

I think the Our Father was composed by God as the method He chose of speaking to God. Reciting it just prevents any danger of error creeping into our prayer. You have an intention and you speak to God with the words He used.

but I think we can also use other words … when Paul asked other Christians to pray for him so that he would announce the Gospel with boldness, he didn’t ask them to pray the Lord’s prayer …
and if you do pray it just because it’s the only way you can be sure no mistakes “creep in”, well, mistakes might creep in in the prayer you suggested to me then, since you “added” some words of yours between the lines …
sometimes I also pray with the psalms or other texts, or texts written by other Christians ( whatever confession they belong to, I really don’t care … ) if I feel they really express what I want to say better than my own words … or sometimes there is a mixture of both …
but it’s true that I can’t really understand this “intention” thing, maybe our religious cultures are too different …
but if our prayer is sincere, God hears it, whether somebody prays like you or like me …

He does need our prayer at all times. After all, he has 1 billion children, 1 billion estranged children, and 4 billion others to worry about.

The number of people there to protect him doesn’t matter if someone is determined enough and cares little enough about innocent life. Only God can protect him then.

I am glad you liked the way I said that. It is true that we may not agree on the path to God, but we do agree that the path is needed and we must walk it. If your way is the only way for you, God Bless. My way is the only way for me.

I certainly agree with you that we pray whichever we like, but Jesus taught us how to pray aslo. I don’t think that anything Jesus teaches is not needed.

What do I think? I only know that the future is in God’s hands.

If you want to discuss this further, it might be a little fun. But we should start a different thread and not hijack Huguenot’s.

Crazy… Well, coming from my background, I can only discredit it as a hoax. If some event does happen, so be it; but predetermining the event in this manner does not set well with me at all. In case you can’t tell.
