SAFEWAY PLAYS SCROOGE: Safeway employees are being asked to work on Christmas Day, “a violation of the spirit of the biggest family holiday of the year,” reports UFCW Local 400. “Our members are outraged that the company is open on Christmas Day,” said Jim Lowthers, Local 400 President. Although not a violation of the union contract, Lowthers termed Safeway’s plans to open some stores on Christmas “heartless,” considering that grocery workers already work year-round “dealing with difficult schedules on weekends and holidays.” Added Lowthers, “Safeway seems to have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas.” Local 400 has urged Safeway to reconsider its decision.

Industry experts expect other grocery chains to open Christmas Day as well if Safeway does.

i used to feel the same way about all Sunday’s… the family went into the bucket when business started to open on Sundays… just my :twocents:

Safeway has had union problems here in Illinois with their Dominick’s chain. Since they took over the stores have gone down hill. They came in and made changes in the deli and bakery areas and their business has gone down hill. They are getting their clock cleaned by Meijer’s a chain that is non-union and new to our area. From what the employees at our local Dominick’s say, Safeway does not care about them the way Dominick’s did when it was an independant chain.

I am glad that on Sundays stores are closed here only once a month a few bigger stores in the centre are open.
I never feel the need to go shopping on Sunday, not when I get out of work, not even on free weekends. Prefer to spend quality time
with family or friends.
