I’m sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I think it’ll probably be the most pertinent place for this topic. Next year, I’m probably going to Central Michigan University in the Saginaw Diocese and I’m a little worried about the liturgical state of things (ie, adding honey to the Eucharistic hosts, lay people preaching, etc…). I’m probably not going to the university parish because some things on their website really troubled me. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Sacred Heart Parish that isn’t that far from campus or if Bishop Carlson will be addressing this issue (especially the matter of the host) after assuming his position as bishop later this month.

Thank you!

Hi Pax_2005 ~

to read lots of recent discussion re: this very topic! We are so hopeful that things will change asap when Bishop Carlson is installed on Feb. 24th. Until then, we can only pray and hope and wonder. I have just learned that the hosts used at Sacred Heart (unlike at St. Mary’s the university parish) are the white round hosts, ie appropriate matter for the Eucharist. Other than that I can’t say I know very much about SH. Very near Mt. Pleasant, just outside the north end of town, is a wonderful little Catholic store - The Rosary Store - run by a very good, faithful Catholic woman, Jan. She could probably tell you more and direct you. However, by the time you arrive, HOPEFULLY, things will be “achanging” for the much and long overdue better!! 🙂
God Bless, Beth

Take my word for it guys; Bishop Carlson does not allow abuses. I know until he leaves I’m one of his seminarians. He’s a great bishop. I wish he would stay here in Sioux Falls, I was hopeing he would be the one to ordain me but…when one member of the Body suffers we all do and you need him more then we do.

p.s. one of our seminaries is leaving Sioux Falls and going with him, so at least your have one (again at our expense J )

It was quite a shock when we heard he was moving, after all he’s become something of a spiritual father to me.

I don’t suppose any of you are planning on attending Bishop’s installation? I got invited but it would be a 16 hour drive and I can’t afford to miss 3-4 days of classes. I would really like to hear about if from someone who will be there.

I so wanted to take my kids, but was told one had to have a ticket (or be invited, basically) So instead we are planning to meet him at a nearby parish next weekend. I’ve considered the idea of just showing up at the installation, to see if we can get in…but with 5 children, and almost two hour drive, it would be a huge disappointment to go all that way and be turned away. Any suggestions? Can someone get me a note from Bishop Carlson? 😉
The five children are my 7,9 and 11 year olds and my nieces, who homeschool with us ages 9 and 11. They would be very well behaved and we’d even stand if we had to. I doubt we’ll ever get a chance to see an installation any time soon again. The oldest four girls and even my Samuel (the 7 year old), are very aware of all the reasons we must drive so far to go to Mass each Sunday, instead of being able to go right here at “our” home parish. My oldest niece even wrote her own letter to Bishop Carlson. I mailed both her letter and mine yesterday.

If you do see him tell him that his seminarians from Sioux Falls are praying for him as well as the man who will be our next bishop.

It was announced at my parish this weekend that due to space problems, that there would be 3 lay representatives of each parish going to the installation. (Quite different from when Bishop Ken was installed in 1980 and had the installation at the Civic Center so that more people could attend.)

However, the installation will be carried on local TV stations and radio stations in the Saginaw area.

I went to CMU < the campus parrish drove me nuts, I even had a runin with Bishop KEn myself. Sacred Heart in town wasnt much different. theres a town just to the north called Rosebush only about 7 or 8 minutes away. I remeber going there alot to be in a more traditional Mass. If the new bishop’s changes for the better dont take quick effect that always a choice.
