Ben, reading the words in your post implies something that may help you out. The words were, “I was distressed …” As a human being, we react, it is our nature of sorts. When someone punches you in the face, without even thinking, you find yourself punching them in the face! Nothing wrong with reacting with the same course, though, we are called to be above and not react in the same way (turn the other cheek thing).
Remember, a sin, on any level, has to be objectively wrong, you must know it’s wrong, and you must willingly commit/omit the act.
If you “were distressed”, that would indicate that in your reaction was to some event, some bad reactions came out of you. Once you realize your outburst, that’s when you might actually start to have control over what your run-away emotions and human-frailties is doing to you.
Sin or near occasion of sin, slices cuts in our soul that can easily be remedied by repentance, reconciliation, and penance.
Cut yourself some slack, feeling sorry for a sin that may not have been a sin, in and of itself shows a contrite heart. Nothing wrong for asking for forgiveness for something that doesn’t need to be forgiven, just be cautious not to be scrupulous.
My prayers are with you today.
