Saint Anthony (Antonius) Kim Sung-u is one of the Korean Martyrs who was killed for his Catholic faith. He was the firstborn son of a wealthy family in Korean Empire, and eventually converted to Catholicism. His brothers followed him to the Catholic faith, and he evangelized his village, leading others to convert as well. He was respected member of his hometown and was known for his humility.
However, when the Ki-hae Persecution (1839) occurred, the saint escaped the village but his two younger brothers were captured and died in prison. Saint Anthony was eventually captured as well, but he persisted and refused to give up his faith. His faith in God moved non-Catholic prisoners who were with him, and two prisoners converted to Catholicism and were baptized. Although he has endured numerous tortures and beatings to force him give up his faith, he resisted and was hanged on April 29, 1841. He was in prison for 15 months when he died.
His remains were buried by his son and by other family members, and were brought to several shines after his death. Now, his remains are in Jeoldusan Martyrs Shrine.
He was beatified on July 5, 1925 by Pope Pius XI and canonized on May 6, 1984 by Pope John Paul II.
He is remembered for his well-known last words:
“I am Catholic. I will live as a Catholic and even if I die, I will die as a Catholic.”
나는 천주교인이오. 살아도 천주교인으로 살고 죽어도 천주교인으로 죽을 따름이오.
Saint Anthony Kim Sung-gu, pray for us.
