I hope it’s acceptable to post this in this part of the forums. I’m new here and just making my first post, so please correct me if this isn’t appropriate.

Saint Anthony is the saint I was taught most to pray to as a child, and I have felt his presence and his love very strongly throughout my life. On more than one occasion, he’s done something for me that should have been impossible, but he heard my prayer and granted it nevertheless.

I would just like to begin my posts on these forums with my thanks and love to Saint Anthony, whom I honor with all my heart. And, by the way, you don’t need to consult him only on matters of lost objects. I believe he hears and responds to every sincere need that’s addressed to him.

My middle name is Anthony. My mother named me after St. Anthony, when she was pregnant for me. She was having a difficult time and had to stay in bed for the last 4 months of her pregnancy. She promised St. Anthony, if I came out alright, she would name me after him. When I was born, she check to see if I had everything in place, and all was well. She thought it would be a more special way of paying St Anthony back, by giving me my Baptismal name of Anthony. 🙂

How delightful of your mother to choose this way to honor St. Anthony - and to be sure he’ll be close to you always.
 
If I recall correctly, St. Anthony is also the patron saint of oraters…and what you said was well put, archimedia. Welcome!
 
There is a story I heard about St. Anthony, and I’ll try to give it as accurate as I’m able.

There was an atheist, walking his donkey past St. Anthony, as he was preaching in the street. The man made an angry remark at St. Anthony basically telling him, there is no God, your words are lies.

Anyway, St. Anthony said to the man, that even his beast knew there is a God. St. Anthony told the man that he would even have the donkey prove it to him. The man accepted the challenge. St. Anthony told the man to not feed his donkey for three days and then to meet him there at that same spot. In three days, the man showed up with his starving donkey. St. Anthony was there in the street with a a pile of grain on one side, as he stood on the other side, holding the Blessed Sacrament in front of himself. He asked the man to let his donkey loose. The donkey walked up the street, looked at the grain turned and walked over in front of St. Anthony. The donkey then bowed down on his two front legs before the Blessed Sacrament. The man was filled with faith at that moment, and became a believer.

What a wonderful tribute to St. Anthony! And welcome to the forum!

I’ve always had a love for St. Anthony, because I was baptized at St. Anthony’s parish… in El Segundo, California.

My personal favorite story of St. Anthony… is when the Christ Child appeared to him… and allowed St. Anthony to cradle Him, in his arms. That is how St. Anthony is usually depicted in a statue. He’s a wonderful saint, indeed. God bless.
 
I recently came across a Saint Anthony webpage, and I am greatly inspired. I prayed to him, and almost instantly felt peace and his presence watching over me. Here’s a prayer to Saint Anthony.

A prayer of request to Saint Anthony:

O Holy Saint Anthony, gentlest of Saints, thy love for God and charity for
His creatures made thee worthy when on earth to possess miraculous
powers. Miracles waited on thy word, which thou wert ever ready to speak
for those in trouble and anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore
thee to obtain for me… The answer to my prayer may require a miracle;
even so, thou art the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving Saint
Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition
into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in thy
arms, and the gratitude of my heart will ever be thine. Amen.

St. Anthony has a kind of “uniqueness” in that everyone that implores his aid have, through their lives, call him their “personal friend.” He is my personal friend, too.
 
Thanks to all of you for your welcoming words and wonderful tales of my most beloved saint.

I agree there’s something unique about St. Anthony. Personally, I believe it’s in the way he has of feeling so present and active in my life, so loving. When I ask his help, or just offer up my love and devotion to him, I have an unwavering sense of his presence - his love, concern, and willingness to help. He has been there for me as long as I can remember.

My mother believed St. Anthony had a great sense of humor and joy about him, and she used to joke that she had a service contract with him. 🙂 She didn’t, of course, intend to be disrespectful, but the familiar and loving mode of address was indicative of her complete trust in St. Anthony’s love for us, that he would understand her meaning.
 
St. Anthony is the first St. I recall hearing about. My grandmother used to tell me to pray to him when I lost something of course. But now when I do, I’m reminded of her too and her piety. It’s been along time since I have seen her, but the memory is kindled by this Saint. Tim

I also came to think of St. Anthony as a special friend.

Although St. Anthony was not a martyr who was killed, he was a witness to others for Jesus Christ. And on at least one occasion St. Anthony was at great risk of becoming a dead martyr (but perhaps only from the human perspective of seeing only normally visible things). [Note that the Greek word martyr – μάρτυς – means witness].

When I pray to St. Anthony for something, I normally promise to put something in the poor box at church when he has obtained for me that which I asked. And for more important long-term prayer requests, I usually make a donation to the poor box shortly after my prayer. We have no “St. Anthony’s Bread” box at my church, but I suppose the poor box is just as near to St. Anthony’s heart.

This is also something I really like about St. Anthony.

By the way, I recommend this (and I often do it too). When you pray the Rosary, when you get to the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple – imagine that you are there. Go ahead and wait your turn and when everybody else has talked with Mary go to her and ask to hold the infant Jesus. Then start praying the ten Hail Marys. Even though the baby Jesus does not appear to you, hold Him in your arms by faith and enjoy the Presence of the Lord. I think our Lord loves to be loved this way. Sometimes Jesus may be sleeping. Sometimes I imagine him tugging at one of my fingers and putting it in His mouth. At the end of the decade, ask Mary to take Jesus back and very gently put Him in her arms. This is best done in a private and quiet place of prayer. Or people may think you are nuts pretending to hold a baby. Or perhaps they may think they saw the babe too. I usually hold Jesus in my left arm and the Rosary in my left hand. That way keeps my right hand free – perhaps to brush against His hair or to hold His tiny hands.

Welcome to the forums; hope you post here again soon.

It’s been almost a month since this thread, but, I decided to become devoted to St. Anthony on Monday night when I was looking for something. Naturally when I couldn’t find it I prayed to St. Anthony, as a matter of fact, I said if I find it, I would become devoted to him. I found what I wanted.😃 St. Anthony has always been awesome to me. I prayed for something lost and within hours if not minutes, I have found what I need. He has always been so good to me. I bought a medal of his today and am wearing it. Chain isn’t turning my skin green; I think I’ll keep it.
