Saint Charles Borromeo

This great saint achieved so much. He reformed the church in those troubled times of the sixteenth century when Protestantism was spreading across Europe.
Today is his feast day and I’ve been reading about him. Through his influence many lapsed Catholics apparently returned to the faith.

Further down the page is a litany of prayers that can be said separately or as part of the novena.
 
As my namesake, I had to find something to post to facebook about it…hahaha…so I posted a nice article by Crisis Magazine which kind of compares the action St. Charles took in the 16th century to action needed to be taken today (or is already being taken) - you should take a look at it!
 
He was also shot in the back during benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, by one of his fellow priests, no less!
The heavy vestments he was wearing at the time actually saved his life.
 
I like the fact that Charles had an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary placed above the church doors (churches of which he built and restored).
To honor Mary is pleasing to Jesus and God His Father.

I heard a sermon about him this week, and have been intrigued to learn more about him. He was a courageous reformer, for sure.

The homily made the point that courage is the main characteristic of all the Saints.

Learning about them is a great source of inspiration and strength.

What I like about St. Charles is that he had a “big picture” vision, and the courage to act on it. And he did not let himself get stopped or waylaid by individual critics including one critic / priest who shot him. Amazing.

Among all the other information about him, I also noticed on the Wikipedia page the reference to the protection of Catholics who had fled England to escape persecution during the period following the reformation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Borromeo

Many Catholics remained in England of course, but had to be Catholic in secret, including relatives of William Shakespeare.
